Questioner: I long for bhakti (devotion), I want more of this longing.

Even realization does not matter for me. Let me be strong in my longing.

Bhagavan Ramana: If the longing is there, realization will be forced on

you even if you do not want it. It is the doorway for realization.

Namaste all,

Whose is that longing?

Here is a story from Rumi's Mathnavi:

A man had long cried 'O Allah' but stopped when Satan

had enquired of him why he babbled in such a way when

there was never a reply. When the man stopped his

entreaty Khizr..a special agent was sent to him to ask

why he had stopped:

'The man said, 'The answer "Here am I" came not

whereof I fear that I am repulsed from the door.'

Khizr replied to him,"God has given me this command;

Go to him and say,"Oh much tried one,

Did not I engage thee to do my service?

Did not I engage thee to call upon me?

That calling "Allah" of thine WAS my "Here am I,"

And that pain and longing and ardour of thine my

messenger;

Thy struggles and strivings for assistance

Were my attractions, and originated thy prayer,

Thy fear and thy love are the covert of my mercy,

Each "O Lord!" of thine contains man "Here am I's".

>From Book 3 of the Mathnavi

All 'this' is the desire of the One to be many in its

own unity and to give up the desire for realization,

to offer up 'my longing' with the question "Whose is

this longing?"; Is this the teaching of both Ramana

and Rumi?

That is a beautiful quote. In fact the life story of

the 63 naayanmaar (devotees of Lord shiva most of whom

were from Tamilnadu. Details at

http://www.shaivam.org/naayan_f.html) is mainly this

theme - the love for God than even the liberation, as

sekizar puts in his golden words,

"kuuDum anbinil kumbiDalee anRi

viiDum veeNDaa viRalin viLanginaar"

(Other than worshipping in the growing love, (these

devotees) excelled in the valour of not even asking

for moksha.)

As the vedic hymns put it, when one completely

involves in the enjoyment of praising the Lord knowing

Its glory, the liberation comes right here.

namaH shivAya.
