Guest guest
Dear Jay, I think we need to first find out what kind of "bullying" she is refering to! However, I will try to answer both ways from what ever I came to know from my teachers and from my studies. 1. SPIRITUAL: If your question is about spiritual bullying then here is the approach: if someone claims that his GOD or his Theory is the only theory that is correct -- then the first (the most important) step is to find out *your* position. i.e. (a) you should throughly know what you are speaking of (jnAna) (b) You should have faith in what you have studied (sraddha) © you should have been contended with the answer you got from your readings, enquiries or the answer you got from your spiritual guide (samAdhanam) When you find the above qualities are in you, then you are a Master (adhikAri) to address the person who is trying to push his theory on you. In case, you fail in any of the above, then please pass it on to somebody whom you think is appropriate. But halfheartedly, half-knowingly, you should not attempt to debate, because such a participation in debate will bring eventual misery to you and to the faith which you d in... And this is also an advise to all the people who try to convert from their religion which they are born in to -- in to any other religion! While Hinduism offers the freedom of choice, it also advises --- know about your religion before praising/adopting any other religion. I have seen many Hindus being converted in to other religions. Though the converters claim that it is the supeority of their religion which has made the conversion. In most cases, it is the might of the sword (now a days fear of losing ones own job if he doesnt get convert!) or the might of the money which makes the conversion possible. However, there are people who convert just out of curiosity or to just jump in to limelight and also others who convert out of genuine reasons which are spiritual. Now when you know you are the Master!, when you know you are capable of proving your point then you should find about the other person. The first thing is to listen to him carefully. What is he trying to convey; does he have a point to make; is he having any supporting arguments, or just hypothicating. Hypothication is also allowed because brilliant concepts comeout through hypothications. By listening 10 minutes you will find the other's persons ambitions (also by observing his physical gestures (hAvabhAva), his posture (aasana), his eye contact towards you. (please refer Janaka-Sulabha samvaada, Mahabharata --- for more on taking control over a debating situation). You can assess the person and find out whethear he is having a (a) satvic approach (b) Rajasic Approach © Tamasic Approach (1) Saatvic approach called as SamvAda - he is genuinely interested in proving his point. He does meant no harm to you. He wants to prove his point out of sheer compassion towards you. He is thinking that by proving his point he may make a better human out of you. He is also studied ell. ---- his postures will declare it. You should listen carefully to him. And try to appreciate his points. Now a days it has become quite rare that you come accross such people. Because such people tend to keep quite and accept everybody as good. AND mind you that is the approach of Mahatma Gandhi! He used to sing: "eeSvara allaH tErE nAm sabkO sanmati dE bhagavAn". That was also the approach of the Traditional Hindu saints. And it is also the approach of Jesus Christ. (2) Rajasic approach: alpavAda - he knows very little about his subject. But he wants to prove that he is right... perhaps out of sheer necessity to justify his position. He has more to gain in this world by winning over you. But he also thinks you have a point to make. Try to make your point with him only for a little time. You will know whether you can change him or not with in some time of your discussion. But then you better leave the place, let him think he won... There are pleanty of fools in this world, let him be contented with his club! (3) Tamasic approach: vitaMDavAda, daNda vAda - Either they resort to abuses, or they resort to physical fight... and this is what is called as PHYSICAL BULLYING 2. PHYSICAL BULLYING: They want to prove they are superior, either because of their money, or because of their reach in the society! It is more a political vote counting thing. The more the number of followers of their theory the better. All that matters for the tamasic approach persons is quantity. Not quality of the humans who endorse/accept their theory. A person resorts to violence only when he knows he cant win his opponents by talking! It is also because he doesnt have the logic to support his theory. So the best way for him to win you over is physically bullying you. Reply: NEVER TOLERATE. There is a traditional saying in Hinduism. "idaM brAhmaM idaM khAtraM" as long as you try to peacefully argue with me it is okay and you are welcome (idaM brAhmam) but the moment you try to show your physical superiority and you try to put me down by the might of your sword then I will fight you back (idaM kshAtraM). Unfortunately, world never understood the beauty of Hindu religion and the attitude of the people who endorsed it! The beauty of the religion comes from the followers of it. Let me give you a few examples from the very same GODs we as Hindus adore and take historic examples from them to prove my point... 1. LORD RAMA? Essentially a warrior king! He fought a war with Ravana and defeated him. Rama is a Ekapatni Vrata - Having Single wife. 2. LORD KRISHNA: Essentially again a warrior King! He not only fought wars, but he is famous for his role in the Mahabharata War. He told Bhagawad Gita, which is the most sacred book for Hindus, after which more than 18Million people were killed. He declared "hatOvA prApyasi svargaM, jitvAvA bhOksyasE maheem" Having fought the rightous war, if you lose you will gain the Heaven, if you win you will enjoy here on earth. Remember --- wars or warmonging people or Dictators never let their citizens live in peace, it is the people who fought them and eventually won --- those people were able to enjoy the peace. And that is what Krishna emphasised. He emphasised peace, but peace comes sometimes at the expense of punishing the wicked! Krishna married 8 women! Suffice the above two! However, you refer all our epics --- and all that you can find is the valorous stories of our Gods and Goddesses who fought the famous wars! 95% of the GODs whom hidus adore are Warriers! Also if you see, Krishnavatara came later than Ramavatara. Rama vowed to a one-wife principle, where as Krishna who came later married eight! OBSERVE:- HINDUS TOOK one-wife principle from Rama, and easily ignored Krishna inspite of Krishna coming later! OBSERVE:- HINDUS resorted to the path of peace and non-violence, inspite of all their GODS and GODDESSes --- whom they regularly adore, do prayers and adore by giving them a special place in their homes and in their hearts --- being warriers. OBSERVE:- HINDUS read Bhagawad Gita, which is a book taught in the middle of the battlefield, Arjuna is a character in Bhagawad Gita, he is the person who heard Gita directly from LORD KRISHNA, and he fought a great war after listening to Bhagawad Gita.... STILL Hindus read BhawadGita and --- stood by the side of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, who openly declared that Bhagawad Gita regularly guides them! --- Hindus stood by the side of Gandhi and adhered to the principle of Non-violence. The above observations should suffice to be an eyeopener about the greatness of Hindu Religion. Hindus stood to the Upanishadic advise "iti shushruma dheerEshAM Enastad vAcacakshirE"... Hindus DO NOT BLINDLY FOLLOW their GODs, for they are forbidden to adopt a BLINDFAITH by the very same GODs. However, imagine such peaceloving, GOD abiding people are unnecessarily again and again repeatedly provoked by the BULLYING PEOPLE! Hindus need no more doctine than the lives of their own GODs to fight back! Sometimes, thinking of it I worry about a future where Hindus turn away from their Logical thinking to physical fighting... Can the world come into grips with such a situation? Why should anybody try to provoke a Hindu I dont understand! I believe the world should behave more responsibly towards Hindus and understand their concerns. Sometimes I cant tell you how much I appreciate Swamy Vivekananda's words "garva sE kahO haM hindu hai". Say proudly, we are Hindus. Hari Om! tat sat! Yours, Madhava P.S: It is my concern that the happenings in India are not a good sign, and we should do everything in our way to make peace and calm prevail. The coming twenty days are going to be one of the very provocative moments in the history of India. > -----Ursprungliche Nachricht----- > Von: Vivekananda Centre [vivekananda] > Gesendet: Thursday, February 28, 2002 2:20 PM > An: sa.mitchell; list; Self Knowledge List > Betreff: Fw: Help > > > - > "Sarah Mitchell" <sa.mitchell > <hindu > Thursday, February 28, 2002 11:39 > Help > > > > Hi > > I am a student primary teacher and am currently studying > the topic of > bullying. > > I am looking to see how the different world religions feel > on this matter. > > I would be greatly appreciative if you could tell me if the > Hindu faith > has > > any strong views on the matter. > > > > Yours Sincerely > > Sarah Mitchell > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~response~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > Dear Sarah > > How to react to a bully? > This is a very interesting question. > > Taking into account the Hindu teachings of 'Ahimsa' (Non violence) > one may be tempted to think that Hindu attitude may be perhaps to > 'tolerate' -- but I do not think that is correct.
