I am under the impression that our Tradition which you emphasise so

muu.......ch only said, "Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara". In the recent

times, on this list, you and Dennis have discovered this new, fancy

slogan. Priyam at the cost of Satyam, and Sukham at the expense of

Dharma are both useless and non-traditional.>>

Just for the record, my use of the phrase comes from the aShTAvakra gItA,

15.3, and is one of my favourite passages. I thought it made a very suitable

salutation for a forum such as this and I did not wish for it to appear

'fancy' or to defy tradition in any way!

na tvaM deho na te deho bhoktA kartA na vA bhavAn

chidrUpo.asi sadA sAkShI nirapekShaH sukhaM chara

I have translated this as: "You are not the body, nor is the body yours.

Sir, you are neither an enjoyer nor a doer; you are Consciousness itself -

the eternal, disinterested witness. Be happy!"

sukhaM chara,

Dennis

This is called fancy. Just because you liked, (based on your

interpretation), you started using it.

A more accurte translation could be like this:

" ... you are the of the form of consciousness, the eternal witness,

and so, (understanding this, may ) "You go about happily" (in this

world unattached)."

Hope you see the difference. You have to give a lot of explanation

before your "Sukham chara" slogan, where as "Dharmam chara" is a

vidhi.

Namaste Krishnaji:

I am rather puzzled by your comment that "Priyam at the cost of

Satyam, and Sukham at the expense of Dharma are both useless and

non-traditional." You seem to imply that with Priyam, Satyam should go

and with Sukham, Dharma will not prevail. What prevents us from

having Satyam, Dharmam, Sukham and Priyam?

Our Hindu tradition and heritage does permit people to have various

beliefs and notions within the confinement of Dharma and Satyam. Our

sages and saints have recognized that "one size does not fit all" and

consequently respected individual freedom of choice words, gods and

traditions.

I agree that "Dharma Chara" is vidhi but how many of us really

understand fully what "Dharma" really means. Dharma cann't be easily

understood and is also subject to interpretation and that is why we

see many violations. Let us show follow the Dharma by accepting Dennis

and Venkatesh with what they believe instead of imposing our own

rules.

warmest regards,

Ram Chandran

Thanks for the corrections to my naïve and over-simplistic translation,

Srikrishna. I will cease using this form of salutation forthwith - pity

really but never mind. I still hope that you can 'Be Happy' (and not too

serious!) :)

Regards,

Dennis

Hari Om !!

Dear Dennis

Kindly do not misunderstand my clarification. In

a 'disconnected' 'Sukham Chara' phrase, it sounded to me Umar Khayam

type passive uncredfor pleasure seeking, than that 'carefree

Happiness' implied in the stanza you referred.

You may continue to use as you please, after considering my view

appropriately if valid.

In addition, a small suggestion, you may even experiment greetings

with the salutation to your beloved lord. At least it reminds of your

ideal goal.
