Guest guest
namaste. Shri Swaminarayanan-ji was questioning in the past few weeks 1. why all of us see the same jAgarat avastha (waking state) event while each of us have a different dream 2. why there is seeming continuity in jAgarat avastha while one dream does not follow the other. His questions can be seen re-stated in advaitin/message/12986 I responded to that earlier saying that what we impose (due to our ignorance) on IshwarakalpitamAyA makes the jAgarat avastha appear continuous. I tried to differentiate between IshwarakalpitamAyA (which makes the jAgarat avastha appear the same for all in the waking state) and what we place on top of that in the form of our own likes and dislikes which is the origination of the samsAra. And that the dream-state and the wake-up state are identical. My earlier post on this is at advaitin/message/12930 I found support for my understanding in the GauDapAdakArika in the verses II.9 and II.10 II.9 regarding the dream state says svapnAvr^ittAvapi tv antashcetasA kalpitaM tv asat bahishcetoghr^ItaM sad dr^iShTaM vaitathyam etayoH Even in the state of dream that which is imagined by mind within is (regarded as) non-existing (asat), while that which is cognized by mind without is (regarded as) existing (sat); (but) the unreality of (both of) them is a matter of experience. Here, as I understand, antashcitta is the dream-character while bahishcitta is the dream-generator. As we wake up from the dream, we recognize both the antashcitta and bahishcitta to be unreal. Verse II.10 talks of the waking-state. jAgradvr^ittAvapi tv antashcetasA kalpitaM tv asat bahishcetoghr^ItaM sad yuktaM vaitathyam etayoH In the waking state also, that which is imagined by mind within is regarded as non-existing (asat), while that which is cognized by mind without is regarded as existing, (sat); the unreality of (both of) them is reasonable. Here the antashcitta is the overlaying which we do (e.g. our likes and dislikes) and the bahishcitta is the IshwarakalpitamAyA (e.g. all the jIvA-s see the same blue sky). shri GauDapAdA says this is nothing different from the description of verse II.9. While we are convinced (by experience) of the unreality mentioned in II.9, we seem to have doubts about the unreality mentioned in verse II.10. Shri GauDapAdA concludes that both are identical and both are unreal. Regards Gummuluru Murthy ------
