Guest guest
Thanks for the links, Sunder - sounds interesting. I have read several biographies of Eliot over the years but they have all been rather sketchy about his early studies. Ackroyd says only that he studied 'Indian philosophy' in his second year at Harvard and that he attended a full year course on Buddhism. I had not realised that the quotation in The Waste Land was from the Br. U. (though it actually says this in the Notes after the poem!). Of course, I knew of his interest in the Bhagavad Gita - the Dry Salvages makes extensive reference to it. Also Faber and Faber (for whom he worked for many years) published a version. I don't how much truth there is in it but the film 'Tom and Viv' refers to an incident in which his wife Vivienne pushed bars of chocolate through the letter box at Faber and Faber. These fell onto the manuscript of the Bhagavad Gita which had just arrived by post and practically ruined it! Regards, Dennis
