Namaste All,

May I request the list members to provide input on the

etymology the following sanskrit words:

prakruti : prathama kruti (?)

first creation

shiva : ?(is often translated to mean destruction, negative

and sometimes translated as pure)

related term : shava means corpse, are shiva and shava related ?

shambhu : ?

--------------------------

sama = balance, equalize

There are many words beginning with sama like:

samadhi, samskar, samhita, samasara

Any idea if they are derived from sama ?

Thanks

Namaste Shrinivasji,

I wish I could be of some help. Unfortunately, I don't have the

required paraphernalia right with me. In the circumstances, may I

suggest that you download (free) the Monier Williams Sanskrit Digital

Dictionary from the following site, if you don't already have it:

http://members.ams.chello.nl/l.bontes/sans_n.htm

This dictionary needs a little familiarization, after which it is

just wonderful. For example, it gives several meanings and

references to the word prakruti. Such wealth of information might

help you compare meanings and reach reasonable etymological

conclusions.

Best regards.
