Dear ShiningLotus, I think that "enlightenment" can't be explained scientifically ; it is to be in the pristine state as Sri Ramana says , or 'That' ; [ I am no admirer of the world "enlightenment" so this is why i put it between apostrophes], I think that in our pristine state science doesn't enter ; and we have the sages and their teachings for that , different experiences of different people could be only a distraction , just an opinion, Love Ramana , the Greatest of All, vicki p.s - as you talked about enlightenment , I'll bring Sri Ramana again to tell us what is enlightenment , as actually many different people are different people having different experiences delluding themselves and others that they know what enlightenment is. The Scientific Experiments in the book quite plainly show the yardstick for knowing what meditation is and how Yogic Mantra Meditation actively changes the life of a person who practices daily > Dhanyawaad aur Pranams Seva Mitra > > DharmaDev Arya Discussion of Shankara's Advaita Vedanta Philosophy of nonseparablity of Atman and Brahman. For a many decades, Ramanashram established by Ramana Maharishi and Sringeri Saradha Peetam, and Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam established by Adi Sankracharya continuosly maintain friendly ties. Sri Ramana, Sri Chandrasekara Bharathi of Sringeri Peetam and Chandrasekaredra Saraswati (with the nickname of Periyava) of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam were contemporaries and they greatly respected each other. Visitors who come from different parts of India and abroad usually visit these three spiritual centers and the sages. The above three spiritual masters had the one common goal - uplifting the spirit of the masses who needed their services. I have never heard or read the sayings and writings of these great masters any negative comments on others. We have a lot to learn from these giants in preserving civility during any our conversational style interactive dialogs. If any of us have disagreement with another member in the list(not only on the subject matter but in addition on the personality) we are better off to have separate email correspondence. This can greatly enhance civility and can potentially remove unpleasantness and frustration. One of the most important purpose for posting a message in this list is to highlight or bring new insights to the delivered messages of spiritual masters. As a minimum the poster should have a great inner feeling and relaxation of mind after posting his/her message. When one or several members who read the message also felt some relief, relaxation and uplifting of their spirits, message and consequently this list fulfilled its noble goal. The well known principle in economics, "pareto optimal" is quite useful for of us as a guidance for posting a message: When the message uplifts the spirit of atleast one member and at the same time brings frustration or unhappiness to none then the message is pareto optimal. Most important, we should never atttempt to send a message which conveys our unhappiness and frustration and brings unhappiness to the readers of this message. Isn't it our duty to choose a win-win strategy instead of opting for a lose-lose strategy! Let us take a moment to contemplate and act accordingly, Ram Chandran ______________________ ______________________ Message: 4 Wed, 3 Jul 2002 05:10:29 +0530 thehindu Article sent from The Hindu ============================================================= This article has been sent to you by Ram Chandran ( rchandran ) ============================================================= Source: thThe Hindu (http://www.hinduonnet.com/2002/07/03/stories/2002070300540800.htm) Miscellaneous - Religion ``Manual of instructions by Manickavachagar CHENNAI JULY 3. Apart from numerous guidelines interspersed in all scriptural books, in some among them are deeply hidden certain powerful "Mantras" reciting which a devotee can be in communion with God. These texts ask us to make a deep study of the verses and if this is not possible, at least listen to their expositions so as to make us think over the statements therein and act. If both are difficult, at least the valuable and precious texts can be kept in our homes as the "Mantras" will exert an indirect influence on us. Some of the saints had not gone to any school, but still Divine Grace filtered into them making them illumined. Steps like visiting temples, adoring the idols and reading sacred works and attending the talks by saints will strengthen our moral bend. The "Thiruvachagam" by Manickavachagar is such an important holy book as it contains the "Sivapuranam" revealing the five-lettered "Siva Mantram". It is a spontaneous outpouring of the heart's travail and triumph in melodious! songs and can be termed as a manual of instructions for the conquest of the enemies within us. Though God is present everywhere, He presents Himself in an individual in the deepest and most central chamber of the soul. The saint declares that a devotee who deeply yearns to enjoy Bliss will not be let down if he firmly catches God's Feet thereby making Him practically immobile. Material prosperity may get transferred from one source to another easily at any moment but when a person holds to God through devotion, He will not go away from him. Such a devotee should ensure purity of his body and soul, said Sri Kanagasubramaniam in a lecture. "Cling fast to God, who is free from all desires. Seek Him for your freedom from attachment", says Saint Thiruvalluvar in one of his couplets. True religious life consists of the avoidance of envy, craving for pleasure, anger and harsh words. Do not say to yourself, "let me see about it later when I am better fitted". Religious aspirations will be the unfailing support when all else will disappear and become of no use. How to be freed from evil influences can be learnt from the life of an ant, which will cleverly carry only the tiny piece of sugar though an identical particle of sand is also kept nearby. Though only paddy seeds are sown, yet weeds also grow, which ought to be removed. Without postponing a decision to resort to religious steps one should strive hard to reach the goal. Self-Inquiry is not inconsistent with other spiritual practices. After Kunju Swami and served Bhagavan for 12 years and asked for advice on how to proceed, Sri Ramana suggested Japa, Kirtan, meditation, etc. in combination along with inquiry. It should be remembered that Kunju Swami was a highly advanced yogi, who had already glimpsed the nature of the Self and had many superconscious experiences. Sri Ramana has stated clearly that all other modes of spiritual practice presuppose the retention of the mind and therefore lead to Realization indirectly when through grace the mind is absorbed into the Heart. Bhagavan has said that for those able to practice pure inquiry, self-inquiry is the direct and best method for Self-Realizaiton. The Sage of Arunachala, however, did not dismiss other yogic practices and his answers to people were contextual. Quoting Bhagavan selectively can easy lead to the comical situation of making Sri Ramana engage in professional wrestling with his own words. As long as this state continues, they appear to be immersed in some kind of joy. But when the mind, which has become tranquil emerges and becomes active again it resumes its worldly thoughts. It is therefore necessary to train it with the help of practices like Dhyana ( meditation ) whenever it becomes externalised. It will then attain a state in which there is neirther subsistence nor emergence Question How to churn up the Nadis ( psychic nerves ) so that the Kundalini may go up the Sushumna ? Sri Ramana Maharshi Though the Yogi may have his methods of breath control for his object the Jnanis method is only that of enquiry. When by this method the mind is merged in the Self the Sakti or Kundalini which is not apart from theSelf rises automatically The Yogis attach the highest importance to sending the Kundalini up to the === message truncated === New!
