Shankara's Paean to Beatitude

Namaste,

 

saaruupya.n tava puujane shiva mahaadeveti sa.nkiirtane

saamiipya.n shivabhaktidhuryajanataasaa.ngatyasaMbhaashhaNe |

saalokya.n cha charaacharaatmakatanudhyaane bhavaaniipate

saayujyaM mama siddhamatra bhavati svaamin kR^itaartho.asmyaham.h ||

 

svaamin! bhavaaniipate!

tava puujane saaruupyam,

shiva mahaadeveti sa.nkiirtane saamiipyam,

shivabhaktidhuryajanataasaa.ngatya saMbhaashhaNe saalokyam cha,

charaacharaatmakatanudhyaane saayujyam,

atra mama siddham bhavati .

aham kR^itaarthaH asmi .

 

saaruupyam = resemblance

tava = your

puujane = in worship

shiva = Siva (Auspicious)

mahaadeva = Mahadeva (Great God)

iti = thus

sa.nkiirtane = chanting

saamiipyam = proximity

shiva = Shiva

bhakti = devotee

dhurya = eminent

janataa = people

saa.ngatya = company

saMbhaashhaNe = conversing

saalokyam = residing in

cha = and

chara = movable

achara = immovable

aatmaka = your own

tanu = body

dhyaane = in meditation

bhavaanii = Parvati

pate = consort

saayujyaM = identity

mama = my

siddham = achieved

atra = here in this life

bhavati = fulfils

svaamin = O Lord!

kR^itaarthaH = divinely blessed

asmi = am

aham = I

 

O Lord! Consort of Bhavani!

In worshipping You, I acquire here in this life itself, the Beatitude

of Your resemblance;

In chanting Your names, 'Shiva! Mahadeva!' that of Your proximity;

In the company of the great devotees of Shiva, and in conversing with

them, that of residing in Your abode;

And in meditating on this movable and immovable universal form of

Yours, the Identity of Essence with You.

I am indeed divinely blessed!
