Guest guest
Siva Sutra S1.7 S1.7 In piercing the waking, dreaming, and sleeping (states of consciousness) that most enjoyable fourth (transcendental state) appears. "jâgrat svapna susupti bhede turya âbhoga sambhavah" waking dreaming sleeping in-piercing fourth most-enjoyable appears bheda - to pierce, to sprout, bursting forth, shooting out âbhoga - experience, enjoyment, feeling, fullness, satiety sambhava - appears, arising, coming together, birth, being This turiya is something beyond anything in jâgrat, svapna, or susupti; it is not simply some abstract thought form that may be left over in jâgrat when other thought forms are considered to be dissolved away; it is not something that arises because of mental gymnastics in the state of jâgrat (though mental activities are undoubtedly catalytic in perturbing the more fundamental causes yet to be addressed). This turiya is also that transcendental state of consciousness that TM folks come to personally experience dynamically, right from the very first meditations. It's extraordinary, almost magic at first, such an automatic bursting forward of bliss and joy. The key notion of 'bhede', to pierce, here tends to also blend a bit with the ideas of bhava and parinâma, those sprouting transformation qualities that might even find useful parallels and equivalencies in the jargon of mathematics. A new arrival bursts forward on the screen of consciousness here, and most important, it becomes known through the experiences of a fullness of delight and it is most enjoyable. It is something that just appears or arises, sambhava, like a 'new' spontaneous birth to awareness and it might come along together with the other states of consciousness. We may wish or be inclined to compare or equate such experienced turiya states with intellectually defined brahman states, but surely lots of definition and meaning problems can and will yet occur. Undoubtedly mindful of such questioning natural tendencies among spiritual adepts, Siva Sutra continues to analyze and to further distinguish among these four states of consciousness as we continue onward. It will yet advance even subtler concepts concerning an interrelated mechanics of operation among the four states.
