Guest guest
Greetings Advaitins All, Supernatural Reality: Can the findings of science give any comfort to religion? Can any experience whatever confirm or deny in a public objective way religious doctrines from any quarter, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist etc.? Is not doctrine like a projection, or the imaginative picturing of what is remote and mysterious, perhaps based upon the vision of a sage or the cumulative scrying of a lineage developed over the ages. It is a way of bringing what is far away close, to render intelligible what is really inscrutable. It is like as Shankara said in his commentary on 'Satyam, jnanam, anantam Brahmam' the moon on the bough. Naturally it conforms and is coherent with the base rational philosophy thus given that for the Christian tradition identity is based on the fact of being a person and that the physical body is regarded as being integral to the concept of personhood the afterlife will in some shape or form be physical in a physical location. The Vedic view of identity is impersonal but if one has not realised this and in fact identifies with the body then that is the afterlife you get, back again. They agree on that much. The importance of the body for the continuity of incarnation is emphasised by Shankara with his concept of the Linga Sarira which ensures bodily continuity. Any doctrine when rationally pushed will result in paradoxes and antinomies. Remember how in the 19th. century religion was shaken to its foundations by the theory of evolution from the scientific and the demythologisers from the theologic, side. And then along came Ramakrishna. Swami Saradananda relates how "At one time Swami Vivekananda raised an objection in regard to the historicity of the play of Radha and Krishna at Vrindavan and made an attempt to disprove its authenticity. The Master said in reply, "Very well, let us take for granted that there was never any one called Radha and that some loving Sadhaka had an imaginary conception of Radha's personality. But while picturing that character, the Sadahka, you must admit, had to lose himself completely in Radha's mood, and thus become Radha. It is thus true that the play at Vrindavan was thus enacted in the outer world also." (from Vol 1 'Sri Ramakrishna The Great Master' pg.259) There is Krishna loka, Rama loka, Jesus Loka, Grail Loka, Ganesha Loka. All these are confirmed and given supernatural reality by the vision of the devotee and are eternally enacted. When the theories of Einstein in a millenium or even less are shown to be impossibly naive they will be there for the devotee. What separates vision from the delusional imagininings of an enthusiast? Unity is the answer and the reality of divinisation. This is demonstrated by the sadhana of Ramakrishna.(Q.E.D.!)
