NON-DUALISM IN SWAMI VIVEKANANDA’S TEACHINGS: HIS USE OF THE WORDS ADVAITA, NON-DUALISM AND MONISM (by Sister Gayatriprana) September 29, 2002 In a recent letter Sri T.P. Bagchi, commenting on part 121 of Swami Vivekananda on the Vedas and Upanishads, raised the issue of the use of the word monism in #16. He drew to our attention Swami Ranganathanandaji’s emphasis that monism, meaning one, automatically tends to suggest two, three, etc, i.e. duality or plurality; whereas advaita or non-dualism totally denies the possibility of the existence of any second entity whatsoever. To us, it seems that this is an important distinction, especially for the sadhaka who is seeking to transcend discursive thought and directly experience Reality or What Is, beyond any names or forms whatsoever............
