Guest guest
Date:01/10/2002 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/br/2002/10/01/stories/2002100100130301.htm -- Practical Vedanta TATTVA DRISHTI-2 (Anushtana Vedaantamu — Practical Vedanta): Kesavabhotla Venkatasubrahmanya Sastry; Copies available from K. V. S. Sastry, 2-2-1109/5/6, Baghambarpeta, Hyderabad-500013, and also at all branches of Visalandhra Publishing House. Rs. 160. THE BOOK under notice details a variety of topics and is entitled "Practical Vedanta". Vedanta normally is used as a synonym for philosophy, which is not right. It indicates that branch of knowledge, which is at the end of the Vedas. In other words, it denotes only the Upanishads. There are three divisions in it. The first deals with the practice of Vedanta in life. It is further sub-divided into practice, pursuit of truth in personal life and radical thought. The second deals with the doctrine of Karma. The author tries to trace the evolution of the doctrine of Karma from Vedic period through Jainism, Buddism up to the Puranic period. He also attempts to interpret the doctrine of Karma through the six branches of knowledge enunciated by the Vedas. The last part deals with symbolism in mythology, different sections of opinion on the doctrine of Karma, the concept of rebirth, the difference between the heart and mind and many other things. The language, the analysis and the style are very appealing and the book, running almost up to 900 pages, is a commendable effort from the author.
