Guest guest
Hello Eknath, Eknath2K wrote: "The discussions on this thread contained some arguments on whether an inference is 'logical' or 'from intuition'. Is it possible to spell out a set of axioms, that cannot be proved by logic, and from which one has to proceed to understand advaita, so that all subsequent inferences must be made through logic (of course we are appealing to a common understanding of what the rules of inferences are)." I own up to using the expression metaphysical intuition which it seems you either have or do not have. One of these intuitions might be of the basic contingency of the universe. Q: why should there be something rather than nothing? This is the feeling that the universe lacks a footing in the sense that it is not necessary. My C.O.D. defines the real as 'having an absolute and necessary and not merely contingent existence'. Self identity would not be a basic intuition nor do you have to logically work it out. Also for me the sense of their being an external world is a basic given which is foundational. It could be said to be pre-conceptual and does not require arguing for, perhaps. One need only show that any other view is in reality using this ground to build on - 'baseless fabric'. Best Wishes, Michael
