For the past couple of years I have become

increasingly interested in Advaita.I will not claim to

be a scholar, but I have read and been deeply moved

bya number of contemporary and somewhat older

accounts, especially those ofKrishna Menon, Ramana

Maharshi and some of their students, along with someof

the older sources (Ashtavakra Gita, Crest-Jewel of

Discrimination, amongothers). My interest stems

initially from a number of profound personal

experiences,which seemed to come "out of the blue"

starting a few years ago. These completelytransformed

my understanding of life, and I struggled for a long

time tofind a broader perspective or anchor for this

new understanding. I am nowin my mid-50s and have

lived all my life in the U.S. As a former academicand

statistical researcher, my quest took the form of

extensive reading andcontemplation, which eventually

led to Advaita and a smattering of closelyrelated (it

seems to me) approaches, especially in Buddhism.

Although I haveread and still read widely, I will be

very blunt in saying that I am farless interested in

the academic fine points than I am in the

heart-centeredappeal of Advaita.

 

I would be happy to join the group and make

contributions where appropriate.I have followed your

discussions for some time now (since your archives

areopen), and I am impressed by the level of dialogue

and the extraordinarycivility of those who contribute.
