Guest guest
friends, VELLAIKARA TAMILIAN(WHITE TAMILS) RECENTLY I READ AN ARTICLE IN A TAMIL MAGAZINE THUGLAK BY SRI S GURUMURTHY. I AM GIVING A TRANSLATION OF THE SAME FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE READ THE SAME. A white man who can speak good Tamil is called "white tamilian" This is how a British who was borne in Ramanashram in Thiruvannamalai in Tamilnad was called. He was borne in that place and spent his last days in kodaikanal. The man I am referring is Mr Adam Osborne, as the locals call him as vellaikara thamizan. Eventhough many Britishers have spent their life in tamilnad.this man was different from others. That is the reason for writing about him. Adam Osborne's father Mr. Arthur Osborne wrote about Bhagavan sri Ramana maharishi. He stayed in ramashram and he belonged to England. Adam Osborne was borne to him and his polish wife. He spent his early childhood in ramana ashram. He learnt Tamil better than those who learnt English by studying in English schools. He studied in the famous presentation convent. After his studies he went to United States and created a revolution in computers by inventing the portable computer (laptop). Because of this the software development in Silicon Valley became possible. Can you believe that a man who made crores of rupees in states by being a partner for apple computers became insolvent in few years, and returned to India? He spent his last days in kodaikanal and passed away on march 18,2003. A lot of reports came in news papers about his achievements, his love for cricket and his passion for watching cartoons in TV etc.he always had a photo of ramana maharishi next to him. in kodaikanal he never spoke to anyone about his invention of portable computer. One thing which was not published in media his father and mother were believers in Hinduism and stayed for long in ramana ashram. Ramana maharishi never told them to convert to Hindu. They named their child as a Christian (Adam). Mr. Adam Osborne had written an article in Data Quest magazine. This makes an interesting reading as it is about the people in India who had read English. He writes about his parents and their mental thinking about India as compared to that of Indians who read English in India. No paper published or wrote about this article. Let us see what he wrote in it. " I am proud of being borne in India and that too in ramana ashram in tamilnad. As a child I was told by many who were proud of Indian culture and its tredions. Even they were proud of teaching the westerners.he says his mind was well rooted in India, even when he was in states". His comments about Indians living abroad are worth reading. All Indians who studied in India in English do not seem to be recognized as Indians in abroad. This is what Mr. Adams has seen when he met many Indians there. The reason he was unable to find out. Even though the Indians abroad are intelligent and earn more than the Jews and Japanese there, they do not have any pride in being an Indian. He says he was surprised to see this kind of mental block among educated Indians abroad. He says whenever he spoke among them about India and its rich culture and he being proud to have been borne in India, they realized and said what you I said is correct. What is the reason for this me Adam asks. Is it we being ruled as slaves to the British? If so then this pathetic mental block has to change. He wanted to come to India and preach to Indians about the greatness in their culture and traditions. He wanted Indians to realize that they are no second to any in this world. He returned to India to invoke the self-respect in Indians so that India can become a developed nation like Singapore. Every Indian should be proud of being an Indian. By this what is going to happen? By this there will not be any substandard products in India. Because Indians will believe that the product made here should not be substandard. Everyone will concentrate to see that we produce best in the world. Even corruption will come down. A man with self-respect will hesitate to take bribe. What Mr. Adam Osborne was directed towards Indians who went abroad after studying in India. Now we know the reason for all our economic problems. The mental disease, which the people who have read English in India not being able to say with pride that they are Indians.atleast let us think of what, the Vellaikara tamizan said so that we can move forward.
