That jnAnam originates through bhakti. This can be seen also in shri sunder-ji's post (#17184) that bhakti is the mother of jnAnam. The fruit is the important part of the tree; but that fruit will be formed through the flower only. The fruit of jnAnam comes out of the flower of bhakti. In order to have the jnAnam of so'ham, we first have to have the bhakti of dAso'ham. For jnAnam of so'ham, to have a firm abidance of this jnAnam in us, we should be rid of the ego, our abhimAna, and be subservient to God and the guru. That only leads to purity of heart and the steady knowledge of so'ham. Swami Madhusudana Saraswati, the great advaitin with a firm bhakti-grounding (he is the author of GuDhArthadIpika, the commentary on bhagavdgItA) says: dAso'hamiti yA buddhiH pUrvamAsI jjanArdane dAkAro'pahr^itastena gOpIvastrApahAriNA I was worshipping God with the feeling of dAso'ham (I am your servant). Then, after some time, Lord Krishna stole the first letter 'dA' like He stole many of the garments of the gOpikA-s. So, with 'dA' stolen out of dAso'ham, I am left with the Knowledge of so'ham. What this means is: through bhakti, jnAnam is established. In bhagavadgItA 10.10, Lord Krishna says: teShAm satatayuktAnAM bhajatAM prItipUrvakam dadAmi buddhiyogaM taM yena mAmupayAntite To those who are constantly devoted, and worship Me with love, I grant that yoga of wisdom by which they reach Me. buddhiyoga is AtmAnAtmavivekam.
