Namaste!

Here is an insight (or perhaps opinion) regarding Hinduism

that may be worth sharing. I've been trying to put my finger on

some notion to tie it all together, given its bewildering diversity.

The idea is simple. Hinduism is simply the manifestation of

religious consciousness in all of its variety and colors. Whereas

other religions seem concerned with packaging their beliefs into

well-defined boxes, Hinduism allows the human spirit to explore every

facet of divine consciousness. This may be likened to the white

light of pure consciousness being split by the prism of the human

mind into the many colors of the rainbow. For example, I think that

perhaps Buddhism represents one color, the color yellow, due to its

emphasis on wisdom and self-restraint. Advaita might be similar, or

it might be the transparency of space (consciousness) in which all

colors are manifested. The exuberant forms of bhakti would be more

like red or pink or orange. I guess saffron has to fit in here

somewhere, perhaps a mixture of the redder colors of devotion and the

yellow of wisdom. But there is also the blue of infinity symbolized

by Krishna's skin. And the darker colors of Kali and Durga, in so

far as I understand them.

Anyhow, the idea is that Hinduism is a tropical rainforest of

religious experience, rather than mechanical implementation of some

pre-conceived cookie-cutter intellectual dogma, as in other religions.

Of course, the core of all religions is about the

illumination of wisdom and the realization of higher states of

consciousness. But some religions permit more freedom and color than

others. What other religion allows love of the divine to be

symbolized by Krishna and Radha? At first I thought this was a bit

peculiar yet harmless, but now I find it rather charming. Krishna

himself is very charming. I believe that there is a considerable

grain of truth in this. It does seems intuitively plausible to me

that the more spiritually advanced beings in the purer realms of this

or other universes should have an angelic and charming appearance.

That is, when they choose to manifest with any form at all.

Benjamin - Excellent vison of Hinduism - Actually it is not called -ism

at all - it is called 'sanaatana dharma'. -ism got attached subsequently

by other religious advocates who wanted to separate it from their

thinking.
