Guest guest
What's the topic for June? When I sent out the poll, I think No-topic seemed to be the winner by a huge non-vote. There was really only one vote for a definite topic. It was for the "existence of objects" topic to be moved from October to June. Ordinarily that would please me, since I love that topic. But it seemed like it was Benjamin-ji's interest and energy that was the driving force behind that topic. Suppose they gave a topic and nobody came? Also, on that topic, I wanted a springboard to discussion - so I'd hoped to have September to write up a summary of several of the major views on this issue: -the advaitic models of srishti-drshti vada (what has been created is what is perceived), drshti-srishti vada (perception is simultaneous with creation), and ajati-vada (no creation or perception truly takes place), -some of George Berkeley's arguments (Benjamin had consented to write that one up), -Atmananda's arguments, -the person-in-the-street's view, often called "naive realism." Any other topics? --Greg

Suppose they gave a topic and nobody came? Hi Greg, As I said before, I am in a 'quiet reflective' mode now. Some critical and sarcastic comments a few weeks back caused me to pause and reconsider my contribution to the list. After reviewing my previous voluminous contributions, I could see how they might rub some people the wrong way. They were indeed too prolific, and there was too much of 'me' in them. Even if that seems like enthusiasm to me, it will seem like ego to others. But there is a more important sense in which the kind of free-wheeling discussion that I like is not appropriate for this list. I finally understood how this list is constructed. There are about half a dozen people, most of them middle-aged, and many of them of non-Indian origin, who enjoy the kind of free-wheeling debate that I do, and who participate actively in the list. sometimes it seems that the list is only for them, and that is what I thought for quite a while. Then there are hundreds of mostly silent and devout young Indians students who just want to learn Advaita, in a proper, respectable, orthodox, Brahminical kind of way. For this, there is no better teacher than Sadanandaji, who given the depth of his scholarship surely counts as a kind of 'Super Guru' as far as Advaita is concerned. This is a role which he relishes and at which he excels. So let us keep the list focused on a sedate and proper treatment of Advaita, based on scriptures and traditional interpretations, for the sake of the vast majority of the members. After all, that is the democratic thing to do. I no longer wish to parade my ideas and speculations on this list, but I will still read it in order to learn. The discussion on the reality of world is relavent to advaita as you know. Without going off-tangent to similarity of the Buddhistic thoughts and advaita, and unifying the eastern religions etc how about you and Greg discuss the reality of the objective world just on scientific basis. I am sure adviatic concepts converge to that. Just busy in the other list with Jay's mails. Hari OM!
