Guest guest
Hello All, What is needed is perspective intra/extra culturally and historically. Shock horror for you is the norm for the other and vv. What works for one society would be a disaster in another. To assume that the democratic system translates world wide is unsafe.Hierarchical setups together with clan loyalty may produce a greater level of security for other peoples. Benign despotism may even be a workable system for them. In the same way ancient codes that have religious sanction have to be viewed as related to that time and place and require continuous mediation between the Divine and the people who recieve them. In a sense they are rewritten by the focus being shifted to areas that are not time and situation bound. All this is simple and stupid however two unlikely allies complicate the picture - the fundamentalists and the liberal intelligentsia. Both insist that the meaning is given once and for all time. To be socio-centric is natural and normal and it can have amusing aspects to it. (A varient of The Comedy of Manners genre in English Literature is based on it to a degree) I remember being asked in a train in India 'What caste are you?'(I'm Celtic type) An American, Howie, was asked ' You are from where? - New York says Howie - New York, New York, aatcha, Is there much rice in your village? That was pre doordarshan, cable and NYPD Blue. Lately if I watch T.V. at all it is an Irish language channel that I watch. It's such a mental rest to be away from English media. There's a dating game show where the twist is that Mother gets to review the girls for her son. Do they agree or do they not? Irony, sort of. That could travel. Best Wishes, Michael. But not TV or cable. --Greg
