Guest guest
Namaste! Please, What is this Month's Topic? I know Sri Ram mentioned something, but I forgot. I'm ready to turn over a new leaf and contribute to this list in the right way. That means sticking to the topic, sticking to Advaita, quoting from scriptures and authorities provided the context is explained so readers do not get confused, making sure that the reader knows what is merely the author's opinion, and indulging in only a few brief and occasional references to other traditions, always within the context of Advaita. This is good discipline for us all, and we learn more that way. Also, it improves our own mental skills to stick to the topic. After all, since we are interested in Advaita in the first place, it should be enjoyable and rewarding to give all of our posts a fully Advaitin slant. This only makes sense! Om! Guest guest
Namaste Sri Benjamin: Let us enjoy the summer vacation for a month and relax during July. Recently the Advaita-L list has suggested to its members that every member should limit the number of postings per day to a maximum of two. This is a workable suggestion and let us try to follow this rule during July. Also just like the one-liners, long posts are also distortions and we can try to avoid them as much as possible. The Ideal, posting size should be less than 2 pages per length. During July let us focus our attention on the quality of the posting instead of the quantity of postings! The monthly topic will resume from August and we do have volunteers for August, September and October: August: ProfVK September: Sri Nair October: Sri Greg and Sri Benjamin ProfVK and Sri Nair are looking for topics of great interest to members. Please send a list of questions/topics that you would like the list to discuss in depth. Warmest regards, Ram Chandran advaitin, Benjamin Root <orion777ben> wrote: > > Namaste! > > Please, What is this Month's Topic? >
Guest guest
Namaste Sri Ram! >The ideal posting size should be less than 2 pages per length. This is a more ambiguous measure than you might think. It depends on font size, line width, window size, and the size of one's monitor. I am pretty sure that almost every post on this list is actually under two standard American pages with a 12 pt font, even though it may not seem that way. This include mine, though I suspect you have me in mind as a chief culprit. You may wish to specify a number of words as a guideline. My suggestion: choose a post you think is the right size, paste it into Word, do a word count, add 20% for good measure, then round off. Om! Guest guest
Namaste Dear Sri Benjamin: According to Hinduism, there are no external judges to evaluate our sins. I am neither judging you or trying to find fault with you. My suggestion is just a borrowed wisdom from the moderators of other lists. My thoughts on the size and frequency of postings should be treated as broad guidelines. Certainly they are not meant to be rigid rules! Rigid rules in philosophical discussions may not work and such rules have potenitals to discourage the posters and also moderators to volunteer their services. The saying - 'one aspirin can remove the pain but ten aspirin will stop the heart'is quite appropriate in the present context. We should also recognize that the dosage of aspirin (both the size and the frequency) tends to vary by people and by circumstances. The bottom- line is that we should be aware a overdosage of both aspirin and philosophy may not always be beneficial! Guest guest
Namaste Sri Ram! >According to Hinduism, there are no external judges to >evaluate our sins. I am neither judging you or trying >to find fault with you. My suggestion is just a borrowed >wisdom from the moderators of other lists. My thoughts on >the size and frequency of postings should be treated as >broad guidelines. I was just trying to provide some objective technical information about how '2 pages' is a surprisingly elusive measure for the maximum length of a posting on the internet. The reason I mentioned my own postings is simply because they do tend to be some of the longer ones, and I was trying to figure out whether it was only a few of my posts that were too long, or many. I am very happy to try to help you make this list what you want it to be. That is my only motivation for asking some questions as you try to tidy things up here. I am completely behind your efforts. If I were to ever start my own list (which I don't think I have time for anyway), I think I would moderate every message and ruthlessly eliminate those that are either frivolous, unkind, or off the topic. I might end up with a list of only myself, but I would rather that than a sprawling mess. So as I said, I understand your efforts, and I am completely behind them. >The saying - 'one aspirin can remove the pain but ten aspirin >will stop the heart' is quite appropriate in the present context. They are discovering wonderful new things about aspirin all the time. I believe they are now saying that taking one a day helps prevents all kinds of illnesses (but please consult a licensed doctor!). Om!
