What I want to know is: Is it the unique wordings in Sanskrit that Namaste, We are talking of Sabda and Vaak here. It is not the sounds that fit the words but the words that fit the sounds. The sounds already exist they are just teamed up with Sankrit. For the Mantra to be most effective the sounds must be right to attract the corresponding spiritual vibration. However if you really believe in any mantra, it will work for you.........ONS...Tony.IMO
Guest guest
There are so many theories about the Gayathri Manthra, that it is the holiest of Hindu manthras. I am not challenging that. But, I would like to know is how a group of sanskrit words put together be considered that holy? What I want to know is: Is it the unique wordings in Sanskrit that gives the manthra the strength or is it the meaning of the same? What if the prayer was recited in English, for example; will the same benefit be reached? If not, why not? If one will say that the manthra must be recited in Sanskrit, then, more prominence is given to the language than the meaning of the manthra itself, don't you think? What I repeat here is that there are so many manthras in Hinduism, but why is this one considered the tops? Om PARABRAHMAM Bhur BHU LOKA / EARTH / PHYSICAL PLANE Bhuva THE ASTRAL PLANE Svah THE CELESTIAL PLANE (THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE) Tat THAT Savitur THE CREATOR (BRIGHT AS THE SUN) Varenyam MOST WORTHY TO BE WORSHIPPED Bhargo LUSTER OR EFFULGENCE Devasya DIVINE Dheemahi WE MEDITATE Dhiyo INTELLECT Yo WHO Nah OUR Prachodayaat INSPIRE OR GUIDE I may transliterate this as: WE MEDITATE on THAT, DIVINE EFFULGENT CREATOR of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE, WHO is MOST WORTHY TO BE WORSHIPPED as PARABRAHMAM. May He GUIDE OUR INTELLECT (in the proper direction)! There could be many, many different variations to the above, depending on how one interprets the meaning of the manthra! What I would like to know is did Sankara write a commentary about Gayatri Manthra any where? Regards, Ram
Guest guest
Hi Ram: The theory goes something like this: Sound has power, since it has vibration, and all manifest exsistence is just the field of being in vibration. Different vibrations, different manifestations. The analogy is the wine glass that explodes when you hit the right pitch. now nirvana is a "Waveless" state. So some argue how can mantra get you there? My view is that mantra is the key that unlocks the door. Also too mantra would have to be spoken in the origional language; different language, different sound, and hence different vibration. Christianity hass omething like this, for we believe that God spoke the world into exsistence. Moslems believe that the koran must be read or heard in the origional. Translations don't count. The Koran is in a very subtle meterical scheme (fromwhat I've been lead to believe). Translate it, and though you have the words, you've lost the music. God is in the music. So it has limited power to save. (Is this similar to Sufism?). Thisis probably also true of great classics like the "Mahabharata" and the "Lotus Sutra". You have to get them in the origional. Try reading a translation of a great poem like Virgil's "Aeneid" and you get it. Though the content is there, all the poetry is lost. I'm no expert, however. motleyjack Ram Varmha <fritzv wrote: Pacem et Bonham Post your free ad now! Canada Personals
