Dedicate all actions to God

CHENNAI OCT. 21 . It is natural for one who has taken

to the spiritual path to desist from action after

learning that only knowledge liberates without

understanding that it is the last step in spiritual

progress. For some it is a very convenient way of

absolving themselves of their responsibilities when

facing difficult situations in life as they mistake

spiritual life to be different from the worldly life

they lead. This raises the question as to how a

spiritual aspirant is to know the level of evolution

he is in at a particular stage in life. Arjuna voiced

this doubt to Lord Krishna in the Gita after He

described the qualities of a man of wisdom and

explained the relative merits of action and knowledge.

He asked, "If You consider knowledge as superior to

action, why then do You urge me to this dreadful

action?"

The Lord's reply to this highlights how it is not

possible for man to give up action whenever he wants

to. It has to drop of its own accord. Till that stage

is reached one must engage in action. One can test the

truth of this statement for oneself. While it maybe

possible for a person to withdraw from the outside

world physically he cannot keep his mind free of

thoughts connected to the world. So one should not

delude oneself about one's spiritual attainments. In

fact, no one can afford to be self-opinionated in

spiritual matters especially as it amounts to cheating

oneself.

In his discourse, Sri Goda Venketeswara Sastri said a

spiritual seeker could easily control his senses from

indulging in worldly pleasures and surrender all his

actions to God. By dedicating all his actions to God

he will not acquire new Karma. In course of time his

mind will also be rid of its baser instincts and

become calm and poised. Only such a mind, which is

pure, can grasp spiritual knowledge.

Hence man does not have a choice between engaging in

action and refraining from it. He has to only master

the right way of action so that he can utilise the

circumstances of his life while engaging in it to

progress spiritually. When he reaches the level when

actions cease to bind him his mind will be ready to

grasp spiritual knowledge. This is a turning point

when without any effort on his part actions will cease

for him. Arjuna surrendered to Lord Krishna and prayed

to Him to teach him the path of ultimate good and

while expounding the truth He has shown how it is

possible to progress only step by step towards the

goal.
