Ego leads to downfall

CHENNAI NOV.6 . It has been proved time and again that

when a person thinks he is invincible his end is near.

Power and pelf generally give a false sense of

security and it is natural to get carried away by

their trappings. In fact a person who becomes

successful and influential in the world becomes more

and more vulnerable. All worldly attainments are only

transient in nature and no one can enjoy them always.

So it is important to cultivate humility and humane

values and not become inflated with ego by one's

achievements. Moreover, it is also necessary to

remember that whatever one enjoys is due to divine

grace and not attribute success to one's effort alone.

Unless such an outlook is developed consciously one

can easily succumb to ego. The birth of Lord Muruga

(Subramanya, Kartikeya) to vanquish the demons who

caused havoc in the three worlds when they became

powerful illustrates this truth. Surapadma wanted to

become immortal and performed intense austerities.

When Lord Siva gave him a boon, as he was not granted

immortality he sought that he should meet his end only

from one who was more powerful than Him, which He

granted. Convinced that he had outwitted the Lord, he

along with his brothers Tarakasura and Simhasura

became autocratic and intoxicated with power and

started harassing the denizens of the three worlds.

In his discourse, Tiruvarur Sri N.Ramachandra Sarma

said the celestials sought refuge in the creator

unable to bear their atrocities who directed them to

Lord Vishnu. He instead told them to approach Lord

Siva, as He was aware of how the demon had got the

boon. When they went to Kailas they were assured by an

ethereal voice that Kartikeya would be born to redress

their plight.

The Divine Mother could not forget the humiliation She

suffered when She was born as Daksha's daughter at Her

father's sacrifice as everyone kept referring to Her

as Dakshayani from then and expressed Her mind to Her

consort, Lord Siva. He assured Her that She would be

born as the daughter of Himavan. After this She came

to be known as Uma and Parvati. Then Lord Siva engaged

in meditation and taught the truth as Dakshinamurti in

silence to the four sages Sanaka and others, sons of

the creator. Sage Narada was instrumental in bringing

about the marriage of Lord Siva and Parvati and

Kartikeya was born to them as foretold to vanquish the

demons.
