Pure Consciousness - A New Nonduality List

Namaste,

May the moderators please forgive this brief 'advertisement'.

I have just started a new nonduality list called Pure Consciousness at

PureConsciousness/

This is a spinoff of the Clear Void list that I started over the

summer. That list was for discussing 'nondual' traditions in

general, such as Advaita, Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism, etc.

Originally, that list was moderated, but then I let it 'go wild'.

This makes for a spontaneous and lively conversation on a day to day

basis, but little remains of permanent value. And what does remain

is drowned out in the flood of messages when one revisits the

archives.

So I have started a new read-only list, where only I can publish

articles of a longer and more substantial nature. Therefore, it is

more like a journal, with less quantity and more quality (hopefully).

There are only 6 messages so far, but one of them is by a surprise

guest (for those Chinmayans living in Washington D.C.)! That is why

I am telling you about this now. Please do take a look at a very

good article, perhaps the only good one so far.

The rest of the articles so far are by me, not so much out of egoism

but because of copyrights and so forth. I may publish some other

material by the likes of Sadanandaji and Anandajji, but only with

their permission. (I know that I already have blanket permission to

publish their Advaitin messages, but still I will check.) This may

entail collecting a thread of messages into a longer document and

editing out the rough edges. This means work, so it may proceed

slowly. Anyhow, nothing will be published by others unless I get

your specific permission via private email. I'll contact you first

if I am interested in publishing something.

Hopefully, this will be a place some of you return to every few

months or so for some serious reading. It will be slanted towards my

view of things, namely that the various nondual paths are aiming for

the same illuminated consciousness. But any good material is

appreciated.

Contributions are most welcome at orion777ben.

Of course, they will have to pass my editorial scrutiny, just like a

journal, so please bear this in mind. I would perhaps correct some

of the English, but I would also want it to fit in with the spirit

(if not the actual philosophy) of my list. You can get the flavor of

this spirit by reading the first few articles.

Since the archives are public, you can read the articles without

joining. But joining allows privileges, such as having new articles

sent to you by email.

Enough said. Thank you for this digression.

Congratulations Benjamin, you are jumping from clear void to

pureConsciousness and avoiding in the process all impure consciousness!

Just kidding. Keep up the good work. You have my banket permission to

publish anything I write on advaita, since it is not my knowledge

anyway.

Oops, pardon the spelling, I meant www.benjaminroot.com. I have seen references

to it, but there seems to be no DNS listing. It seems that a website would be a

good place for your articles. More accessible than an email list.

Thank you for these kind words, Sadaji. And for my part, I pledge to

present some detailed questions/criticisms of your new series,

Advaita Manjari. The care with which you have written it deserves

that. (Of course, you response is purely voluntary.) This could be

the beginning of a new textbook on Advaita. I don't think there are

too many of them!

Ah yes! Well, webmasters may want to know about this story, so they

can be forewarned. (Sorry for the length of this answer!) I had my

webpage on a GeocitiesPro account, where they gave me a 'free'

domain name with the $8.95 monthly subscription. Then VeriSign (or

was it Network Solutions?) 'tricked' me into paying them for it. (I

wasn't thinking at the time.) This caused my domain name

(www.benjaminroot.com) to be transferred to them, at which point I

had to pay the yearly fee. The fee wasn't much, but I really don't

like being tricked. was no help getting the domain name back.

Finally, I figured out that the thing to do was to simply cancel my

Geocities account and start a new one. That is what I have recently

done.

In the process, I had to lose my old domain name. Network Solutions

keeps a hold on it, even after it expires, in order to try to force

you to buy it back. (Businesses and well-known sites will often feel

obliged to do this, since that is how customers and visitors remember

them.) I really don't like these dirty tricks! Anyhow, I was

beginning to feel that www.benjaminroot.com was kind of egoistic. So

my new domain name is a Sanskrit word, but I won't give it out yet,

since I am still building the site. Eventually, you will be able to

get there from a link on the front page of Pure Consciousness at

PureConsciousness/

The link is not there yet, but when it appears the site is ready

(more or less).

I intend to aim for a new online style. I will try to mention my

name less, since it is the ideas and not the person that count.

Also, some of the 'ecstatic' language I used on my first website may

be changed. I was new at it and felt enthusiastic. That was OK.

But upon reflection, I have decided that only the likes of

Ramakrishna should be allowed to use ecstatic language. The rest of

us should sound professional, even when discussing spiritual matters.

Am I getting more mature, or am I getting old? :-)

Namaste Sri Benjamin:

Thanks for sharing the information about the new list with articles

of "pure consciousness". By naming the lists as 'clear void'

and 'pure consciousness' you have explained why we like the

adjectives 'saguna' and 'nirguna' even though 'Brahman' includes both!

I do like the suggestion of Gregji that a website will certainly

bring more visibility and utility for the articles. Sri Dennis has

similar plan like you to compile important topics from the advaitin

list archives and post them at his WEBSITE. This list and most

importantly all seekers can greatly benefit if we make coordinated

effort to develop websites with relevent materials and articles. It

is quite possible that several others may like to join this noble

cause. This is only a suggestion and what you are planning is quite a

welcome addition.

Warmest regards,

Ram Chandran

I quite agree with your attitude that this Advaitic wisdom should be

spread as far and wide as possible. That is why I am quite happy to

post anything from the Advaitin List that has a general and permanent

value. We should not even mention the word 'copyright'. After all,

we are not trying to make money, are we? :-)

Yes, Gregji's comment about the website is correct, now that I think

about it. So I will start posting articles to my new website when it

is ready. The idea behind the Pure Consciousness read-only mailing

list is that it is very easy to post a message there, by simply

emailing it. But it is not so difficult to upload an article to a

website.

Though please remember, I write all my own HTML! For some reason, I

am reluctant to buy any webpage software, perhaps because I feel that

it will reduce my flexibility. So it does take some time for me to

prepare an article. (MS Word's ability to save as a webpage should

help considerably.)

More to the point, I want to be sure that any article I post has been

well edited, with spelling mistakes corrected and grammar polished.

Now that DOES take a lot of time. So I will be selecting the

articles carefully, and nothing will happen quickly.

A good example of something well worth posting would be Sadanandaji's

new series on Advaita Manajari. But even that would have to pass my

editorial scrutiny. Since this is a hobby, I would proceed in a

relaxed manner ... perhaps very relaxed.

But you and Greg are right. We should 'broadcast' our wisdom as far

and wide as possible. And we should SHARE our articles. Any good

and polished article should be posted on the website of anybody on

the Advaitin List who is willing. That would presumably include

Dennis, me, and perhaps the Nonduality Salon and Harsha's website, to

the extent that they are willing...

And I will still keep the Pure Consciousness reading list for a

number of reasons. For one, it is in the directory, so people

may bump into it that way. Also, I can put the latest URL for my

website on the front page of the Pure Consciousness list, in case I

have more trouble with web hosters and have to switch. The Pure

Consciousness list will be there as long as are.

Hello Benji,

Saving from Word to HTML is one of the worst ways of creating web pages, as it

makes the articles extremely difficult to edit later. One way you can create

pages more easily is to create a template, with placeholders for the title,

author, paragraph and section headings, etc. Then, after you have done the

text-editing, you can copy/paste the corrected text into the placeholders in the

template. If you wish, I can help you with that offline. I have done it

countless times, and created my own (OT) website by writing HTML from scratch.
