Guest guest
Namaste All, This question has been hovering in my mind for some time now, and I don't have an answer, so I thought I will ask it here: Why did Navya Nyaya become necessary? I was wondering whether there was a compelling reason that necessitated the complex systems developed by Gangesa Upadhyaya and others? For example, Modern Symbolic Logic which developed in the West (through the works of Gottleb Frege in late nineteenth century ) could be said to have originated from the way language was being used by the idealist philosophers. Frege felt that these philosophers were not using language the way it should be used when they said that an object doesn't exist, or when they said that the object was only mind. Frege attempted to build an ideal language that would avoid the misuse of language. Was there anything lacking in the traditional Nyaya system that a system like Navya Nyaya had to be formulated? With regards, Chittaranjan

I must admit that I am at present able to follow hardly a tenth of what is in there. My apologies in advance if it is a big digression Regards Sridhar
Guest guest
As I understand navya naaya came into picture in synthesising the concepts of Nyaaya and viasheshika into one. It developed tremendously with Gangesha and later with Raghunaatha Shiromani who systematized the concepts in concrete terms. Hari OM! Namaste, For a brief overview of this topic: http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/series/as/AS_verse_08.htm http://www.philosophy.ru/library/asiatica/indica/edu/02/6.html For details, Sw. Satprakashananda's "Methods of Knowledge" (1974) is a good resource. Regards, Sunder
