Guest guest
Surrender all actions to God CHENNAI, FEB.26 . Contrary to the general notion that unrighteousness prevails in this Kali yuga and hence it is not conducive for spiritual life, a great devotee-poet who has summarised the Bhagavata Purana in verse, taking the cue from this scriptural text lauds birth as a human being in this age because the means to realise God is the easiest now. Devotion is the key to liberation in this Yuga and the simple methods of singing His glory and chanting His names can be adopted by one and all, as they do not have any stringent regulations. The Narayaneeyam of Narayana Bhattatiri is this devotional work in 1034 verses composed by him before the Lord of Guruvayur. According to the hagiological tradition the image of the Lord in this temple was the one worshipped at the time of Lord Krishna and He instructed Uddhava to direct the preceptor of the celestials, Brihaspati, along with Vayu to install it in a suitable place when the sea submerged Dwaraka. In her discourse, Srimathi Prema Pandurang said the Narayaneeyam opened with a description of the Supreme Being as existence, consciousness and bliss without a parallel. Realising Him is the highest goal of all human endeavours and it puts an end to transmigration. He is beyond the limitations of space and time. Lord Krishna's declaration when He revealed His cosmic form to Arjuna during the teaching of the Gita highlights this truth, "I am the eternal Time-spirit, the destroyer of the worlds." In day-to-day life it is possible to progress towards liberation by dedicating all actions to God. God is always accessible but in the hustle and bustle of daily life the modern man has lost his faith and moorings. How then can he regain it? Adi Sankara in his hymn, the Bhaja Govindam, says that the sure way is by cultivating the company of His devotees. Their influence enables one to develop steadfast faith in the saving grace of God. Life becomes stressful only when one tries to manage it on one's own. Instead if one remembers the Lord's promise in the Gita, "The devotees who loving no one else constantly think of Me and worship Me steadfastly ever united in thought with Me, I bring full security and personally attend to their needs," there will be no room for any worry. One can take a leaf out of Kunti's book. She underwent endless suffering but when Lord Krishna asked what she desired this devotee prayed that she should always face only sorrows in life, as that would enable her to remember Him.
