Guest guest
Namaste, While we're talking about modern European philosophers, let me mention a great book by C.E.M. Joad called 'Guide to Philosophy', first published in 1936 and now available in paperback from Dover Books. This is a very clear and enjoyable introduction to philosophy; it is the book which got me interested in the subject when I was in my teens. By the way, he gives all the arguments *against* idealism (the view that reality is mind or consciousness in some sense) and Berkeley's in particular, circa 1936, when the British philosophers like Bertrand Russell were tearing the idealists to shreds. (Idealism dominated British and German philosophy during the 19th century.) G.E. Moore's famous argument is here, along with many others. Needless to say, all of these arguments can be rebutted without too much trouble. According to the EB on the web, he was agnostic until his last years. There's nothing like the jaws of death to shake up one's complacent convictions. Benjamin
