(Idealism dominated British and German philosophy during the 19th century.) G.E. Moore's famous argument is here, along with many others. Needless to say, all of these arguments can be rebutted without too much trouble. Unquote There falls the great resolve of our dear friend Benjamin to the irresistible charms of the 'I' word. But none can say he 'caved in' easily. The first 57 days of the year stand testimony to this. The restraint of brevity has already brought out the poet in him. Anyhow, the Joad book is a great and inexpensive introduction to Western philosophy, or indeed to philosophy in general, for those who would like to supplement their Advaitic studies. It does not treat each philosopher one by one but rather discusses the issues in clear and general terms. And the main issue it discusses is whether things really exist and in what sense. Which is very pertinent to Advaita, I would say... As for my new 'brevity', the less said the better... :-) Let the 'I' prevail, not the I-word!
