Guest guest
Namaste: The new Advaitin homepage (http://www.advaitin.com) has been recently updated with more useful information about the list and advaita related materials and sites. This site will provide necessary additional support to achieve the goals of the list. Members who maintain their own homepages (non-commercial) with a focus on religion/philosophy are requested to forward information to me as soon as possible. We will have a separate page describing homepages maintained by members and moderators of this list. Since I am located in the Washington Metropolitan, I have provided a separate page describing the temples and organizations in the area. This page with full update will serve as a guide those who want to know about the Hinduism related religious institutions in the Washington Metropolitan. I will be more than happy to add additional sites and information as I gather them. The advaitin site will slowly synchornize the materials found in the site (advaitin/) To access materials on the site, members have to sign up with and get an userid and password. It seems many members are not able to use the reference materials from that site. Hopefully the new advaitin site will provide the information gap. Please visit the new site and provide your feedback by an email to me Warmest regards, Ram Chandran Ramchandran

Guest guest
Namaste Ram-ji, The date of Sankara is given in the website advaitin as 788-820 AD. I believe it has undergone a revision by about 100 years backward. Please check it and see if this is true and in case it is, please use the revised date. Thank You. Guest guest
Namaste: Debates have continued for over a century regarding Sree Sankaraachaaryar's period, with no authentic conclusions as yet. Prof: Theele in his "Outlines of the History of Ancient Religions" (1877) had mentioned the period as 788 - 820 AD. He had surmised this from a statement in "Aarya Vidyaa Sudhaakaram" of Yajneswara Saasthri, a work based on "Sankara Mandaara Sourabham" of Bhatta Neelakandhan, son of Thrivikraman and Parvathy Amba. Neelakandhan had another Kaavyam (poetic composition) "Sankaraabhyudayam", in which it was mentioned that he was born in 788 AD and died on Vaisaakha Poornima day. His period is attributed with certainty to be after scholars such as Bharthruhari, Dingnaagan, Gaudapaadar, Dharmakeerthi and Kumaarilabhattan. Most of the references site this time period. Thus 788 - 820 period is believable. regards, Ram Chandran Note: I request not discuss on this topic in the middle of an interesting discussions. You are welcome to forward any information that you can provide directly to Ramchandran. advaitin, "Raghavendra N Kalyan" <kalyan7429> wrote: > Namaste Ram-ji, > > The date of Sankara is given in the website advaitin as 788-820 AD.
