Namaste All,

On the question of Shankara and the 'isms' am I right

in thinking that *vada is the sanskrit for *ism as in

vijnanavada, satkaryavada etc.

On PG's:

Speaking of the razor's edge ye ancient ones out there

that shave with with that tool will know that the

final critical edge depends on the quality of your

stone. The harder the stone the better the edge as

those microscopic scratches are polished away. But

this is a slow process so the most efficent method is

to use the coarser stone first. But if you shave

with that edge it will be like unto a hacksaw blade.

Best Wishes, Michael.

Namaste Michaelji,

Good point, and I agree with you. Strictly speaking,

Shankara's should be spoken of as 'Mithyavada', and NOT 'Mayavada'.

Mithyavada would then be translated as 'Unrealism', rather

than 'Illusionism', the latter word used merely as an approximate

illustration or simile. I do not think Shankara has ever used Mithya

as equivalent to Maya, the latter being an inherent Power'

or 'Shakti' of Brahman. Realism in Vedanta is then 'Satyavada'.

Mithya is that which is subject to the 6 modifications

(ShaDvikAra) - (asti, jAyate, vardhate, vipariNamate, apakShIyate,

vinashyati - exists, takes birth, grows, matures, decays, dies).

Would anyone have a reference as to when the word 'Mayavada'

was used and by whom?

Regards,

Sunder

who else? but the followers of Goudiya vaishnavism ! and srila

Prabhupadha , the leader of the Hare Krishna movement in the west...

well, these are just names...

1) mayavadis - a term used by vaishnavites for followers of adi

shankara

2) dualists etc... a term used by advaitins for followers of dwaita !

and one should only look at the big picture ...

The pure consciousness ...

is there one way to realize 'braHman' ?

TRUTH IS ONE , PATHS ARE MANY!

EKAM SAT, VIPPRA BAHUDA VADANTI!
