Guest guest
Hello All, A small bit of supplementary information on Thomas and his Gospel and on the Gnostics collated from the Oxford Dict. of World Religions. Thomas was the doubting Thomas of the Gospel of John and tradition has it that he brought Christianity to India. The Syrian Christian Church claim his as their founder which would mean that Christianity is there for longer than much of Europe. The Gospel of Thomas is a gnostic Coptic document consisting of 114 secret sayings of Jesus to his disciples. The Greek original dates from c.150. Some of the sayings may be genuine eg. "Love your brother as your soul (i.e. self) and guard his as the apple of your eye". Gnosticism is interesting. Some of its roots are in the Jewish faith, other influences may be Eastern. It would be the source of what are regarded as heresies as their cosmology plainly contradicts scripture. For them there is a remote supreme being and a demiurge responsible for the imperfect world. They believed that Christ's sufferings were apparent rather than real. Jung amongst moderns is influenced by their thought. Harold Bloom the scholar aligns himself to them with a goodly ladle of Kabbalah added. 'Omens of Millenium' has a good deal of quite esoteric material. I recommend it if you spot it in the publishers remainders basket where I found it. I have extracted some long sections in an essay on lokas http://homepage.eircom.net/~ombhurbhuva/grailcup.htm That comes with a mental health warning so it's not to be brought on the list. Best Wishes, Michael
