Ranjeet Sankar" <thefinalsearch Add to Address Book Undisclosed-Recipient@, Shanti Mantra-s - 5 (Rig..Contd..) Fri, 16 Apr 2004 12:41:14 +0400 Vedic shAnti mantra-s - 5 (A work by Swami ChidAnanda Puri) -------------------------- 2. shAnti mantra in the Rig Veda - Contd. The practices one should follow in life in order to become established in the Truth revealed by the words of the Teacher is indicated by the next line. It is also the natural state of the Knower of the Self. ' anenAdhItenAhorAtrAn saMdadhAmi ' - I shall join together days and nights with this study. Here, the practice to be followed by the seeker to get established in the Truth proclaimed by vedAnta - not letting the Truth to depart from him, is told. 'I shall join together days and nights with this study' essentially implies the constant reflection (manana) done by the student on the Truth heard from the Teacher. It is also said, 'AsupterAmrateH kAlaM nayedvedAntacindayA' - Till deep-sleep every day and till death, one should lead one's life reflecting on the Truth set forth by the vedAnta shAstra-s. For the student in whom the immediate intuition has not risen by hearing the Truth from the Guru, reflection (manana) is indispensable. There is not even a speck of doubt in this. This line can be seen as a vow taken by the seeker to lead his life constantly reflecting on that Supreme Truth learned from the Guru. This can also be seen as a prayer to help him in leading such a life or as a general guideline for the seeker of Truth. This line can be interpreted in all these ways. The world of plurality doesn't affect a jnAni in whom the Knowledge propounded by the scriptures has become his immediate intuition. He is ever established in the Truth, One without a second. He is always in his natural state, his true nature. The seeker is praying for attaining that state. For that, the scriptures advises us not to abstain from our studies of the shAstra-s at any cost. (Note: Refer Tai.Up ). The prayer continues, 'RRitam vadiShyAmi satyaM vadiShyAmi..' - I shall utter the Supreme Truth; I shall utter the truth. 'RRitam' means the Supreme Truth. It is the Supreme Truth described in the vedAnta-shAstra-s which is beyond the limitations of space, time and causality. This is more like a vow taken by the Seeker that he would utilize his words only in conveying the Supreme Truth. We can also decipher this as a prayer to help him practice this virtue in life. I will only utter the Supreme Truth, the Absolute elucidated by the vedAnta-shAstra-s. Further it is said 'satyaM vadiShyAmi..' - I shall utter the truth. In vedAnta, the word 'truth' denotes that which is the Absolute, without any limiting adjuncts and which is beyond time, space and causality. However, since 'RRitam' also denotes all this, 'satyam' is used here to denote the truth in the empirical or the transactional (vyAvahArika) realm. I will first reflect on what I have to say and will say it only if I am sure that it is the truth. I will practice the virtue of saying things as it is. I will not utter any falsehood. I will only utter the truth. I pray for this virtue. For the Supreme Truth in the vedAnta to rise as one's own immediate intuition, the first step is to follow a life-style which is established in truth. Truth is the very foundation of dharma. shruti itself says, 'satyamAyatanaM' (Ke.Up.4-8 - truth is the support). While leading my life established in this truth, pray help me in getting established in the Supreme Truth. To be continued..
