Namaste,

could anybody please tell me the significance of the Name / Goddess ' Bhavani '

?

>From the information I could find, looks like she is depicted as the Goddess of

creation,

probably according to Shaktism. Appreciate any more information.

Thanks

Namaste:

The invocation of the name, 'Bhavani' has special significance

according to the following message contained in Kanch Kamakoti

peetum's homepage:" Singing the praise of Ambika, Bhagavatpada says

in Soundarya Lahari that so great is the mercy of the Mother that

the moment the Bhakta (devotee) began his prayer with the words,

Bhavaani tvam, Ambika did not even wait till he completed his

prayer, but conferred on him saayujya, viz., the merger of the soul

with the Mother.

"Bhavaani tvam daase mayi vitara drishtim sakarunaam Iti stotum

vaanchan kathayati bhavani tvamitiyah; Tadaiva tvam tasmai disasi

nija-saayujya-padaveem Mukunda-brahmendra sphuta-makuta neeraajita

padaam".

When the devotee began saying Bhavaani tvam, he was only addressing

the Divine Mother by calling Her Bhavaani, and invoking Her grace,

though the expression can also be interpreted as meaning, "May I

become You". It is this merger with the Supreme that the Mother

granted as soon as She heard the words "Bhavaani tvam". The

significance of this verse is that one imbued with true devotion

gets things unasked."

The mother goddess is called by bhaktas at different times by

various names and each has its own significance. (For example,

mother Kali is invoked to get rid of all evils). It seems that the

name 'Bhavani' is an important reference point for advaitic seekers

because Bhavani is the PARABRAHMAN!

Here are some additional stotras and Bhajans on Bhavani.

BHAVÁNI-BHUJAÑGA-STOTRA

Úaãádhára-pañkeruhántar-virájat-

suúmnántarále'-ti-tejo-lasantèm

Sudhámaïãalam drávayantim pibantim

sudhámürtimèãe cidánandarüpám.(1)

I bow to that embodiment of ambrosia which is Consciousness and

Bliss incarnate. It melts the orb of the moon and drinks (the moon-

light). It shines with its profuse lustre inside the suúumná located

in the lotus of úaãádhára.

Suúumná : a vein of the body supposed to be one of the passages for

the breath.

Úaãádhára : one of the mystical circles in the body.

jvalatkoûibálárka-bhásáruïáñgim@m

sulávaïya-ùøñgára ùobhábhirámám

mahá padma kinjalkamadhye virájat

trikoïe niúaïïám bhaje ùri Bhavánèm.(2)

I worship that Goddess Bhavánè who is seated on the triangle which

shines in the midst of the filaments of the white lotus. She is

extremely beautiful with lovely and charming grace. She has a

shining red body similar to that of innumerable rising suns.

Another Interesting Bhajan:

ambâ bhavâni jaya jagadambe

ambâ bhavâni jaya jagadambe

ambâ bhavâni jaya jagadambe

ambâ bhavâni jaya jagadambe

Victory to the Mother, Consort of Bhava (Lord Shiva), Mother of the

Universe!

Bhuu- bhav means to become. Bhavani implies that she who manifested.

Hence she represents both creative power and created too.

Namaste. In continuation of the above, here is a quotation from

Brahmandapurana as a statement by Lord Vishnu Himself:

AdyA-shaktir-maheshasya caturdhA bhinna-vigrahA /

bhoge bhavAnI rUpA sA durgA rUpe ca samhare //

kope ca kALikA rUpA puM-rUpA ca madAtmikA //

Meaning: (Lord Vishnu speaking): The Great Lord Mahesha's original

Shakti takes four forms. In Enjoyment and experience She is BhavAni;

In battle and fight She is durgA; In anger She is Kalika. In

masculine form it is Myself.

That is why we have "Vishnu-rUpiNI".

as the 893rd name in Lalitashasranama.

Yes, Bhavani is a beautiful name ; that is one of the names on my

list if ever i get a grand-daughter ! Right now, i have ttwo

wonderful grandsons!!!

Yes, the maratha king worshipped 'Bhavani' as his family deity. This

GODDESS is known as Tulaja Bhavani in Maharashtra and as Kshira

Bhavani in Kashmir!

There is a Bhavani Bhujanga Stotra and it is available at

http//www.kamakoti.org
