Guest guest
nairji, Wow! i am totally impressed with your brother's thoughts on this subject . and i also agree with his statement " Maybe in future works, you could consider giving greater stress on devotion and detachment (Bhakti & Vairagya), the other two aspects of spirituality to which His Holiness Sankaracharya, the greatest exponent ever of Vedanta philosophy, devoted equal attention. " Yes indeed ! as you might have all noticed , i tried to introduce 'vairagya shatakam' and 'nirvana shatakam' from time to time in this group. I also continued with my 'bhakti' theme but could not crate a 'wave' in this ocean of adwaitic consciousness !!! now i am delighted shri Narendra has interpretation of Purnamadaha from a pure bhakta's point of view . May his tribe increase ! Other than that, i am not competent to comment on this great dialogue between two wonderful brothers - Krishna ( narendra) and Balarama ( madathil) smiles! i would like to share this with you all "pyari_h" <pyari_h Thu May 13, 2004 11:44 am Re: Prabodha Sudhakaram - Adi Shankaracharya Bhagavatpada zankaraM zankarAcAryaM kezavaM bAdarAyaNaM sUtra bhASyakRtau vande bhagavantO punaH punaH Acarya Shankara, the unrivalled propounder of Advaita Vedanta, advised his own mother practise devotion to Lord Krishna, and blessed her with the vision of the Lord. Listen to his proclamation in the last chapter of 'Prabodha Sudhakaram', verse 150 - kAmyopAsana yArthayanty anudinaM kincit phalaM svepsitam, kecit svargam athApavargam apare yogAdi yajnAdibhiH, asmAkaM yadunandanAMghri yugala dhyAnAvadhAnArthinAm, kiM lokena damena kiM nRpatinA svargApavargaizca kiM? "Those who waste their time for the attainment of celestial joys or liberation (mukti- apavarga) are FOOLS! I do NOT want any of that! I only desire to remain engrossed in the sweet remembrance of the lotus feet of Lord Krishna. What is the need for pleasures of this world or heaven or Mukti to exalted Prema bhaktas of the Lord?" Thus Sri Shankara appears to consider all objects, including final liberation as insignificant in comparison to constant loving meditation of the lotus feet of his beloved Lord, Sri Krishna. Jaya Sri Radhey ********************************************************************** advaitins may not agree with this 'sweeping' conclusion in the last para? anyway, does anybody have an english translation of this book Prabodha Sudhakaram? Guest guest
Namaste Adiji. Thank you for your good words. I am forwarding your reply too to my brother. I will request him again to be a Member of our List, a suggestion he has so far resisted on the ground that it may dangerously promote his ego. That is rather like our Ranjeetji. I share your view that we should take bhakti and vairAgya for a month long discussion. I can ask my brother to do it after enrolling himself. Chances are that he may not agree for the reason mentioned above. You couldn't create a wave perhaps because you didn't present your thoughts in a planned manner. What is required is a comprehensive write-up on the topic as a foundation to build on. Otherwise, it will be like running about trying to catch dragonflies in the garden. I am sure Sunderji (and advaitic consciousness too!) would be most willing to accommodate the topic provided someone takes up the initiative and gives a solid presentation to begin with to be discussed in a reserved slot of time. A good idea, as Ramji often suggests, is to ask a number of questions at the end to lead the discussion in proper directions. Who will bell the cat? Any suggestions from your side? If you have, kindly present them to Sunderji for consideration. PraNAms and thanks again for your good sentiments. Guest guest
thank you nairji, Your brother Narendranji is 100% right . but, participation in these group discussion does 'inflate' and sometimes'deflate' one's ego! sometimes, leaving a group may also be a sign of 'ego'- one cannot truly say! smiles! you write ... " You couldn't create a wave perhaps because you didn't present your thoughts in a planned manner. " Maybe so. The beauty about 'bhakti' is it is spontaneous; it comes from the heart and not from the intellect. satyapi bhedApagame nAtha tavAham na mAmakInastvam sAmudro hi tarangah kvacana samudro na tArangah || Even when I am not under the influence of Dualism, O Lord, I belong to You but You don't belong to Me ; the waves belong to the sea but the sea never belongs to the waves. (Shankaracharya's VishnuShatpadi) btw, where is Ramachandranji ? i do miss his input. love and regards
