Guest guest
Namaste Professor, Last Post this evening It seems as though you are drawing me into deep waters or dangerous forests. I will pick this up again tomorrow but a little Googling came up with an advaita-L discussion which I somehow found my way into some time ago, and a bit of Ramanuja. I will see what a fresh morning intellect will produce tomorrow: Thank you for the task, Ken Knight 1) http://homepage3.nifty.com/ajunamar/e-texts/skt/vas_txt.html >From Ramanuja’s Vedarthasangraha kiMsvid vanaM ka u sa vRkSa AsId yato dyAvA-pRthivI niSTakSur-maNISiNo manasA pRcchated utdyad adhyatiSThad bhuvanAni dhArayan / brahma vanaM brahma sa vRkSa AsId yato dyAvA-pRthivI niSTatakSur manISiNo manasA vibravImi vaH brahma-adhyatiSThad bhuvanAni / dhArayann iti sAmAnyato dRSTena virodham AZaGkya brahmaNaH sarva-vilakSaNatvena parihAra uktaH / ataH sad eva somya+idam agra AsId ity atra+apy agra ity-Ady-aneka-viZeSA brahmaNo pratipAditAH / bhavad-abhimata-viZeSa-niSedha-vAcI ko 'pi Zabdo na dRZyate / praty uta jagad-brahmaNoH kArya-kAraNa-bhAva-jJApanAya+agra iti kAla-viZeSa-sad-bhAvaH / AsId iti kriyA-viZeSo, jagad-upAdAnatA jagan-nimittatA ca, nimitta-upAdAnayor bheda-nirasanena tasya+eva brahmaNaH sarva-Zakti-yogaZ ca+ity aprajJAtaH sahasraZo viZeSA eva pratipAditAH / @@(34) yato vAstava-kArya-kAraNa-bhAva-Adi-vijJAne pravRttam ata eva+asad eva+idam agra AsId 2) From advaita-L archives Vidyasankar Sundaresan <svidyasankar at hotmail.com> wrote: >dvaita, on the other hand, is so >keen on refuting each and every point of advaita, that it misses the forest >for the trees, and has to take brahman as only the efficient cause, thereby >admitting prakRti in by the back door as another kAraNa I accidentally stumbled upon another piece of evidence for brahman being the material cause of the creation. In the Rigveda, the poet, at two places asks the question - kiM svid vanaM ka u sa vRkSa Asa yato dyAvA pRthivi niSTatakSuH (from RV 10.31.7 and RV 10.81.4) This translates to- "What was the tree, what wood, in sooth, produced it, from which Earth and Heaven were made?" P.S Deshmukh says that the answer is given in the Taittiriya Brahmana - brahma vanam brahma sa vRksha Asid / yato dyAvA pRthivi niSTatakSuH. (from TB 2.8.9.5/6) This translates to- "brahman is the forest brahman is the tree from which heaven and earth were made" This is another piece of evidence to show that brahman is the material cause of creation.
