Guest guest
Namaste Advaitins, A number of postings have appeared on the subject. Life is for Exhausting Karmas done in the past i.e. in the previous lives and also in the current life of a particular jeeva. This is applicable to all the jeevas. However in the case of jeevas borne of Adhama Yonies i.e. Lower Wombs, life is there only to exhaust karmas i.e. karma phalas or results of actions. Exhaustion of karma phalas involves both sufferings and enjoyments depending on the nature of karma done. The body is known as Bhoga Ayatanam, i.e. the Place for Experiencing, i.e. experiencing karma phalas. Like everything is given to the Jeeva, life is given and body is also given so that the jeeva can exhaust the karma phalas. However, only for the jeevas borne of human wombs, there is Karma Swatantryam, i.e. a choice in performing actions, i.e. Kartum Sakyam, Akartum Sakyam and Anyatha Kartum Sakyam. This choice results in doing further karmas whether virtuous or evil. In the case of jeevas borne of Adhama Yonies, they do not have this Karma Swtantryam, as they are all programmed to a great extent. Only in the case of human beings, although they are also programmed, but to a much lesser extent depending on the past karmas, they have this choice of action, to a much greater degree. It is only because of this choice of action, there is Purushhartha for human beings. By following purushartha jeeva continues to perform karmas, till it realizes that its existence as jeeva with a body and life itself is just the result of ignorance and its real nature is Sat Chit Ananda. Once this knowledge takes place in jeeva, i.e. when jeeva is stripped of its jeevaness, by removal of its ignorance about its self, there is no more kartutwa for such an enlightened jeeva, and since the doer or karta itself is not real, whatever is done by the karta is not real. Since doer of karma is not real, karma is not real, karma phala is not real, the body for experiencing karma phala is also not real, and therefore, life which is necessary for exhausting karma phalas is also not real. Everything is just a set up, but based on ignorance about the real nature of jeeva. The entire foundation is just an appearance and everything gets collapsed on knowing this fact. The question can come. Why one enlightened jeeva continues to have life even after enlightenment. It is very well explained in the Upanishads that its continuance is just for exhausting karma phalas which has already started taking effect, and although the jeeva continues to appear to experience such karma phals, it knows that it is all not real. Once the body drops of such a jeeva, there is no more life given to that jeeva nor a body given to that jeeva. This is what our Scriptures say. We cannot make any verification on this point. WE NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT THAT. LET US PONDER ABOUT HOW WE CAN LIVE HAPPILY NOW AND HERE. To make it very simple, the purpose of life is for living. We all want to live with happiness and all our pursuits are directed towards “attaining” happiness. So, the purpose of life is just to attain happiness. Advaita’s message is that you need not attain happiness as you are happiness itself and what is required is just to know that fact, i.e. your real nature or swaroopa. Absence of this knowledge makes us to engage in various activities or running away from activities, just for the sake of becoming happy. Whatever we do or do not do, ultimate we do not become what we want to become. It is just impossible, because how can one become that which he is already, how can one become happy when he is already happiness itself. There is no becoming happy, as happiness is not result of any action. Happiness is our own real nature of Swaroopa. Once this knowledge takes place, slowly but definitely, one starts accepting everything as his own reflection, and this gives a lot of inner leisure and acts as a shock-absorber whenever there are shocks in our journey.
