Several Honorable members have referenced this analogy in the last

few days and have given their own interpreation of what it means.

Some are in agreement with one another. some are not.

Meanwhile, it is nice to see respected members like Ranjeet ji and

Prabhuji reincarnating in this forum. and from this moment on, we can

expect some 'Real' Tattwas from the 'UNreal' ROPE coiled like a

SERPANT and obstructing our view of reality ! smiles!! After all, one

name for Maya-sakti is also'Kundalini'- the serpent energy lying

dormant in the MulaDhara Chakra!!

Well, as you all know , when in Doubt, turn to Shri Ramana ! That is

what I did and found the following excerpts ...

Maharshi: There is no alternative for you but to accept the world as

unreal if you are seeking the truth and the truth alone, for the

simple reason that unless you give up the idea that the world is real

your mind will always be after it. If you take the appearance to be

real you will never know the real itself, although it is the real

alone that exists. This point is illustrated by the analogy of the

snake in the rope. You may be deceived into believing that a piece of

rope is a snake. While you imagine that the rope is a snake you

cannot see the rope as a rope. The non-existent snake becomes real to

you, while the real rope seems wholly non-existent as such.

Maharshi: well then, that world, which you say is real, is really

mocking at you for seeking to prove its reality while of your own

reality you are ignorant.

Maharshi:And what is the nature of the world? It is perpetual change,

a continuous, interminable flux. A dependent, unselfconscious, ever-

changing world cannot be real.

Maharshi: You won't find Names and Forms sepArate from the substratum

of the World, to get at name and form, you will find reality only.

Therefore attain the knowledge of that which is real for all time.

Maharshi: It is seen on account of wrong ideas. When someone says

that he took a bath in the same river twice, he is wrong because when

he bathed for the second time the river is not the same as it was

when he bathed for the first time. On looking twice at the brightness

of a flame a man says that he sees the same flame, but this flame is

changing every moment. The waking state is like this. The stationary

appearance is an error of perception.

Question: Where is the error?

Maharshi: Pramata (the knower).

And How did this Knower come ?

Maharshi: On account of the error of perception. In fact, the knower,

and his misperceptions appear simultaneously, and when the knowledge

of the Self is obtained, they disappear simultaneously.

Perception and projection - Gregji? are you reading this? Counselling

and adwaita - wow!!! Jng explained his patients dreams via some

theories from HINDUISM based on Karma and reincarnation.

Well , in a dream state- what is the reality ? and in the waking

state , what is the dream? something our Shakespeare would love to

discuss !

Life is but a Dream !

enjoy !

===I like these among the Ramana quotes:

"...unless you give up the idea that the world

is real your mind will always be after it."

and

"A dependent, unselfconscious, ever-

changing world cannot be real."

This counseling thing can affect, weaken or shatter the world-is-real idea too.

Even theoretical philosophy can do it, as Richard Rorty has been showing for

about 25 years!

Hi Greg

Here are some excerpts from Nisargadatta's

I AM THAT (Chapter 2) which I quoted in my paper.

Some of the clearest statements on this issue...

http://www.nonduality.com/asmi.htm

You know only what is in your consciousness. What you claim

exists outside conscious experience is inferred ... You may

postulate a world beyond the mind, but it will remain a concept,

unproved and unprovable ... The world appears to you so

overwhelmingly real because you think of it all the time ...

All happens in consciousness. The world is but a succession

of experiences ... Your conviction that you are conscious of a

world is the world ... What you do not know is that the entire

universe is your body, and you need not be afraid of it ... The

pure mind sees things as they are – bubbles in consciousness ...

Once you realize that the world is your own projection, you are

free of it ... The world can be said to appear, but not to be ...

Even space and time are imagined. All existence is imaginary ...

In reality all is here and now and all is one. Multiplicity and

diversity are in the mind only ... The very idea of `else' is a

disaster and a calamity.
