If the prarabdha karma is accepted as resulting from the balance sheet of previous actions - then current action also should reap the results, which can counter of the results of previous actions. If you are responsible for the actions in the past, you are equally responsible for what you do now, so that future results are past modified by your present action. 'Remaining silent', if at all, should be where you do not take responsibility either for the past or for the present action. That involves an understanding that I was never an actor before nor now- Silently watching the action that is taking place through Body-mind-intellect complex. No one can remain from action - 'nahi kaschit kshanamapi ...' One can remain inactive in action, but that requires an understanding of who is the actor in all actions. Hari OM! Namaste, This is a translation of Ramana Maharshi's response to his mother's pleading with him to return home. I do not know if the translation from Tamil is accurate or not. Maharshi used another metaphor on other occasions: When a husband (ego) dies, all his 3 wives (agami, sanchita, prarabdha karmas) are widowed at the same time, not one by one! Sorry Sadaji. You got reminded twice! :-). Just to make you feel better, Sri Ramana did once say (and I paraphrase) that he was fortunate not to be attracted to any school of thought and get stuck in the quagmire of philosophical speculation! :-). I was noting the contradition in the statement. Along with prarabda there is a purushaartha too. Otherwise Sadhana has no role to play. - Krishna's message is be inactive while performing the action. Inaction in action - while contemplation is action in inaction. No wonder Krishna said it is difficult to understand "kiM karma kimakarmoti kavoyOpi atra mohitAH". Hari OM! But they still do for loka sangraha - just as Krishana did. Ramana also took care of his mother when she eventually came back to him. When he knew that she is going to comeback which will be more beneficial for her, whey should he go with her when she asked her to return home. There is more loka sangraha by his staying at Tiruvannamalia than going with her. That is the silence in action. Hari OM! As a practical matter, what you say always makes perfect sense. In the Bhagavad Gita Sri Krishna sometimes appears to emphasize destiny and other times free will. Same seems to be true for many great sages including Sri Ramana. But as in quoting Sri Krishna, you rightly point out that these are difficult things to understand. Sadaji, we all know you as a great devotee as well someone who has enormous depth in the advaitic teaching and knowledge. Thanks for all your sharing and please forgive my lapse into humor.
