Guest guest
A member wrote to me off list asking for the meaning of the sanskrit sloka on the Home page! well, this VERSE is CHANTED before reciting Adi Shankara's Dakshinamurthy stotra! AUM yo brahmaaNaM vidadhaati puurvam.h yo vai vedaa.nshcha prahiNoti tasmai . taM ha devamaatmabuddhiprakaashaM mumukshurvai sharaNamahaM prapadye .. AUM shaa.ntiH shaa.ntiH shaa.ntiH The Meaning AUM . I surrender to THAT, who projected brahma at the beginning of the creation and revealed vedas . The inspiration turns my intellect towards Atman . May peace be on us for ever. The member slso wants to know who Dakshinamurthy is? Dakshinamurthy is perhaps the only Hindu deity that sits facing the southern direction. This fact is implicit in the name itself. The great seer Ramana Maharshi, has interpreted the name as "Dakshina amurty", meaning one who is capable but without form. Both names refer to Lord Siva and represent Him as the Supreme Teacher. Dakshinamurthy's uniqueness as a teacher lies in the fact that he teaches through silence, through his all-pervasive Consciouness. The traditional image that portray Him thus is described by Sankara with a poetic play of words in the seventh verse of this work as "mudraya bhadraya". acharya.iitm.ac.in/mirrors/vv/literature/sankara/dakshina.html - 128k - Cached baalyaadishhvapi jaagradaadishhu tathaa sarvaasvavasthaasvapi vyaavR^ittaasvanuvartamaanamahamityantaH sphurantaM sadaa . svaatmaanaM prakaTiikaroti bhajataaM yo mudrayaa bhadrayaa tasmai shriigurumuurtaye nama idaM shriidakshiNaamuurtaye .. 7.. He, whose existence is changeless throughout the various states of the body (like old, young etc) and the mind (waking, dreaming etc),and who reveals the greatest knowledge of Atman by GYaana-mudra (thejoining of the thumb and the forefinger of a raised right hand) - to that Dakshinamurti, who is embodied in the auspicious Guru, I offer my profound salutations. http://sanskrit.gde.to/doc_shiva/dakshina Lord Dakshinamurthy is considered the ultimate Guru. In fact, it is said if you do not have a physical Guru, you can meditate on Shri DAKSHINAMURTHY and he will lead you to the Guru! In fact, one of the names sri Lalita Parameshweri is 'Dakshinamurthy' IN sRI lalita Sahasaranama. In all representations of LORD DAKSHINAMURTHY, YOU SEE A DEMON CRUSHED under the feet of the Lord .THE demon IS THE DEMON of Ignorance. Lord DAKSHINAMURTHY DESTROYS OUR IGNORANCE OR AVIDYA and leads to the knowledge of the Self. LORD Dakshninamurti (Shiva) manifests in three different forms as God, Preceptor and the Self (Atman). The all-pervasiveness of the Atman is clearly expounded in the tenth verse of the hymn. sarvaatmatvamiti sphuTiikR^itamidaM yasmaadamushhmin.h stave tenaasya shravaNaattadarthamananaaddhyaanaachcha saN^kiirtanaat.h . sarvaatmatvamahaavibhuutisahitaM syaadiishvaratvaM svataH siddhyettatpunarashhTadhaa pariNataM chaishvaryamavyaahatam.h .. 10.. The verse points out to the all pervasiveness of the indwelling Spirit,Atman. By the recital, contemplation and meditation of this hymn, the disciple attains the state of oneness with Atman and realizes his unity with the universe, thus becoming the very essence of the eightfold manifestation. ********************************************************************** It is alleged that Adi shankara did not compose the Dakshinamurthy stotra as generally believed... But by merely reading the 10 verses and its intrinsic lyrical beauty, i am convinced it is our beloved Bhagavadapada who has composed this masterpiece... Some posts ago, member Srinivas questioned the authorship of adi shankara's Saundarya Lahari ... then we had Stigji raising doubts about Afi shankara being the author of Viveka Chudamani On this day of full moon, my salutations to the Guru of all Gurus, SHRI SHRI DAKSHINAMURTHY!!!!
