Guest guest
Dear friend, Pranams. For a beginning, I suggest, you buy the book 'Poojavidhaanam' published by Sri Ramakrishma mutt. For different poojas, the normal procedure has been explained in fairly detailed manner. The common procedures and special procedures meant for the pooja of different deities, are explained in simple language. Please try and let us know. Guest guest
If I may suggest, the easiest way is that you try to follow the same method you follow to invite great people to your home. It is the bhava (imagination) which is very important. Pooja is an expression of your respect to towards your beloved diety. What ritual do you follow to hug your child? (pure love) what ritual do you follow to pay respect to your parents (archana)... Traditionally puja is done using 16 steps. Imagine you want to invite someone great, who deserves your respect, to your home. What is the step number one? You give him a phonecall or meet him personally and invite him to home, isn't it? Step Number 1 in puja: Avaahana (Invitation) Guest arrives, he must have walked a long way, traditionally host washes the feet of the guest (of great importance) with water. Step Number 2 in puja: Paadyam (wash the feet of the diety) Then you wash his hands. Perhaps on his way his car may have broken down, he might have got his hand dirty. He might wish to wash his hands before giving you a shakehand :-) Step Number 3 in puja: Arghyam (wash the hands of the diety) Then you offer water to him to drink. Perhaps he walked a long way to reach you. He may be thirsty! Step Number 4 in puja: Acamaniyam (offering drinking water to diety). So as you can see, it is the same method which we follow in Puja. So does not matter even if you do not know sanskrit, even if you can not recite the mantras. All that is important is the Bhava. Please read Gita 12th chapter. How you can pay your respect to the Lord, what pleases the Lord is beautifully said there. Now coming to the practical aspects, you may try buying various pujavidhanam books available from Chinmaya Mission, they are very practical in their approach. I wish you all the best. The purpose of performing sacrifice is to please HIM. Yoga is for realizing HIM. All fruitive activities are ultimately rewarded by Him only. He is supreme knowledge , and all severe austerities are performed to know Him. Religion (Dharma) is rendering loving service unto HIM. He is the supreme goal of life.
