Dear members

Pranams.

We have read many times the rope and snake analogy to illustrate the

misconceived perceptions. This is regarding to vision. Are there any similar

analogies pertaining to other sensory perceptions?

Yes. It is primarily vision. But, isn't the scenario much more

complicated? For example, the rustle of wind in surrounding bushes

can be mistaken for the hiss of the snake. What about physical

reactions - the shiver running through the spine, panting and

perspiration? Aren't they tactile and even more?

Besides, we can invent several other, perhaps, less effective

analogies like misunderstanding the blessed Smt. Subbalakshmi for

some other singer, the scent of an aromatic for jasmine or the

tactile softness of some material for that of rose. I can give you a

typical example from personal experience. Of course, it occurred

rather at subconscious level. The 'reality' was a mosquito bite

behind my knee right on the knee joint. I was half-awake. My mind

projected the discomfort picturesquely as an old Gujarati woman who

was unable to properly move about due to a kneee problem!

Sensory perception can never be isolated purely to a single basic

sensory stimulus. There is vision in hearing. A carpenter right out

there now is banging. The sound projects a picture of a guy with a

hammer on the mind's screen. Is it hearing or vision?! This applies

to all other stimulii.
