Popular descent of God

CHENNAI, AUG.30 . The Almighty's incarnation as Krishna continues to

be popular because it is possible for both the philosophically

inclined and the devotee to relate to Him. As the charioteer of

Arjuna He donned the mantle of a spiritual preceptor (Guru) and

taught not only the absolute truth but also how to apply it in day-to-

day life. The very theatre where it was enunciated conveys that

spirituality is not divorced from worldly life and is as much

necessary to the laity as to the intellectual. But Krishna is the

devotee's delight as the enduring figure of easy accessibility and

hence it is possible for one and all to relate to Him. The mystics

have exhausted all modes of devotional mysticism with Him as the

Godhead.

Periazhwar could look upon Him as his child while his foster daughter

Andal who grew up listening to His divine sports related to Him as

the Gopis of Brindavan did. His descent was extraordinary in every

sense. He was born to Devaki and Vasudeva but was transported to

Nanda's household without any delay. He grew up there without His

foster parents being aware of this till the scene of His action

shifted to Mathura. Sage Narada was instrumental in the unfolding of

the divine will in this manifestation, said Srimathi Sudha Seshayyan

in her discourse.

Kamsa with very great love for his cousin Devaki escorted the bridal

procession after her marriage to Vasudeva, but the moment he heard an

ethereal voice predicting that her eighth-born child would be

instrumental in his death all his love evaporated and he pulled out

his dagger to kill her. It was Vasudeva's entreaties to spare her

promising that he would hand over all their children that made him

relent but he kept them imprisoned.

When Vasudeva handed over his firstborn son Keertiman even the

tyrant's heart changed for he gave the baby back but Narada put the

fear of death in his mind by cautioning him that the cowherds in

Vraja and their wives, their kinsmen, the Vrishnis headed by Vasudeva

and his relatives were all celestials who had descended to the world

to aid in the Lord's manifestation for the destruction of the Daityas

who were a burden to the world. So he started killing every child of

Vasudeva without taking any risk. It was Narada again who reminded

Kamsa later when all his attempts to kill Krishna failed that He and

Balarama would be responsible for his death to expedite the purpose

of the Lord's manifestation.
