Guest guest
Yes ! Peter! You are absolutely right! The Yoga Vasishta is indeed an inspiring work and has influenced great saints like Sri Ramana Maharishi, Swami Vivekananda etc ... who used to quote from this text frequently. In this great scriptural text Yoga Vasishta, complex philosophical truths are explained through simple parables or stories. It is said that Once Sri Rama became very depressed and dejected and approached his father and asked King DASHARATHA as to why there is so much suffering and unhappiness in this world. The king was unable to answer this question and directed his son to approach GURU VASISHTA. Sage Vasishta, was of course, very pleased when Sri Rama approached him and was eager to elnlighten his young disciple on the philosophical question of why there is so much suffering in the material world. and Sage VASISHTA explained to Sri Rama that there is no suffering per se it was all due to state of mind ; once the mind is subjugated, one can transcend joy and sorrow. My favorite verse from this great treatise "O Rama, you are not born when the body is born, nor do you die when it dies. To think that the space within the jar came into being when it was made and the space perishes with the jar is sheer foolishness..." You can obtain a copy of this great book at amazon.com Vasistha's Yoga by Swami Venkatesananda or you can directly get a copy of this book from Ramanashram, india. maybe our most respected sunderji can provide some links on the web ! love and regards advaitin, "Peter M" <nous07.theos@b...> wrote: > Dear friends, > > Could anyone help me by way of sharing any background information on "Yoga > Vasistha" ie, historical reference, origin, authorship etc? > > A beautiful and inspiring work. > > Many thanks, > > Peter
