namaste.

During the interlude between the discussions of the monthly topics,

may I bring up this query.

While studying the kAmakalA vilAsa (shoDasAkharI mantra vivaraNa),

I came across the following mantra which is said to be from the

shruti.

parokshaMcA paroksheti vidyAdvedhA vicArajA

tatrAparokshavidyAptau vicAro'yam samApyataH

The meaning is clear (I think). Through vicAraNa (analysis), we

get paroksha jnAnam and aparoksha jnAnam. Of that, getting (or

having) that aparoksha jnAna is the culmination of the analysis.

I would be most grateful if shri Sunder-ji or any other member

let me know from which shruti is this mantra and the reference

there to.

Thanking you in advance.

Regards

Gummuluru Murthy

Namaste Murthy-ji,

I have not been able to locate this mantra in the

Upanishad or Vedic Concordance books.

There are some passing references to the tantra book,

but no complete translation or cross-referencing to shrutis.

(Sometimes one has to wonder, if mention of 'shruti' is made just to

give 'authority' to the quotation!! else the original source could

easily have been given).

These references are excellent:

Namaste Murthy-ji,

The quotation is from Sw. Vidyaranya's Panchadashi

6:15 [Chitra Dipa adhyaya]

Panchadashi 6:15

parokShA cha aparokShA iti vidyA dvedhA vichAra-jA |

tatra aparokSha-vidyAptau vichAraH ayaM samApyate ||

"The Knowledge arising from enquiry and reflection is of two kinds,

Indirect and Direct. Enquiry ends on the achievement of the Direct

Knowledge of the Self."

[Tr.

Hari Prasad Shastri; Publ. Shanti Sadan 1965]

namaste shri Sunder-ji,

Thanks very much for the information. It is amazing how

you can get to the source and the reference so quickly

so many times in response to request by members. The

recent reference you provided to shri Dennis Waite is

another example.

In my Telugu book on kAmakalA vilAsa, the reference is

given as shruti. May be, as you said, the reference is

given as shruti to give it an 'authority'. Or, the author

considered pancadashi discussions as shruti (because of

his reverence to that text).

Thanks again for clarifying the origin of this verse.

Thanks to 'Google', and some luck with the 'key words' entries!!
