Guest guest
Namaste, In the month of August 2004, I had agreed to write a summary of the nine essays that were posted to the group as part of the discussion for the July (and August) topic of 'The Real and the Unreal'. I had been postponing this task, partly due to a busy schedule that left me with little spare time to write, and partly because the task of writing a summary proved to be tougher than writing the essays themselves. However, during the last weekend, I put pen to paper and produced a summary of sorts. In writing this summary, I have emphasised the dialectical aspect of Advaita, which according to me is the central logical device used in Shankara's bhashyas for the exposition of the non-dual truth. I had already indicated the dialectical nature of Advaita in the closing lines of the third essay, but I had not expanded on the theme in the subsequent essays, and it appeared to be a good idea to approach the summary from this angle. I will be posting the summary later today and would request the learned members not to start a fresh debate given that two months have already been spent in discussing the topic. Warm regards, Chittaranjan
Guest guest
Namaste: Thanks for willing to provide an executive summary of the two months discussions for members to read during the upcoming Holiday season. Your request to members not to start any new debate on the discussed topic is quite timely and important. Those members who can't stop their temptations, may please send your comments directly to Sri Chittaranjan through private email. If some of those emails warrant a reply, Sri Chittaranjan may be able to do so after two weeks. As learned members of the list, we do need to respect the wishes of Sri Chittaranjan and I hope that we can all do it! Happy Thanks Giving to all, Warmest regards, Ram Chandran advaitin, "Chittaranjan Naik" <chittaranjan_naik> wrote: > > Namaste, > > > I will be posting the summary later today and would request the > learned members not to start a fresh debate given that two months > have already been spent in discussing the topic. > > Warm regards, > Chittaranjan

Guest guest
I am a new member. I could not read all the earlier posts yet. But in the mean time a question props up in my mind. It seems all members of this group have understood Advaita vaadam very well. From the kind of debate and discussion that is happening that is what I conclude. But so what? Has this group already discussed, "Therefore what change does it make to my life? How do I live my life with this knowledge of non-duality devoid of forms and names?". May be you would have already discussed. But from the sequence I thought if we had come to that stage then we wouldn't have gone back to the debate on the theory! - Taranandanatha advaitins [advaitins] 23 November, 2004 8:13 PM advaitin Re: Summary of essays posted during July-August discussion advaitin, "Ram Chandran" <RamChandran@a...> wrote: > > > Thanks for willing to provide an executive summary of the two months > discussions for members to read during the upcoming Holiday season. > Your request to members not to start any new debate on the discussed > topic is quite timely and important. > Namaste, The summary and the revised table have been added to the Bibliography file below: What is Real and Unreal by Sri Chittaranjan Naik The original compilation of the 9-part series is at: PDF file is available at the advaitin Site: http://www.advaitin.com/LinksToListDiscussions.html List Moderators Discussion of Shankara's Advaita Vedanta Philosophy of nonseparablity of Atman and Brahman. Guest guest
Hi Chittaranjan-ji, Great to see that you have got around to the summary. For those on the list who did not read these, they are available in nine separate essays at my website, beginning with www.advaita.org.uk/realist_chittaranjan.htm . I will add the summary within the next day or so and read it through there. (By the way, are you still intending also to produce a glossary?) Best wishes, Dennis
Guest guest
Namaste Nandakumar-ji, The theme of the Monthly Topic in September 2004 was "The Place of Practice in Advaita Vedanta". (Message #s 24398 to 24734). You may find some answers to the question you have raised. We can return to the theme if you would post your own personal views. The same topics do get repeated, theory or practice, as new members join in and ask the questions that are uppermost in their minds. Not all postings will hold equal interest for every member, but patience will pay off as different members will express their views in a variety of ways, knowing full well that language alone will never be able to capture the personal intuition and its impact on personal life. Guest guest
Dear Dennis-ji, Thank you Sir. Sunderji had sent me some terms to include in the glossary, but I haven't begun working on it. As things are, I think I'll drop the idea of producing a glossary. But it would be a good idea to have glossary in the list's files section that would include all the common terms used in Advaita Vedanta. If there are volunteers for the same, maybe the moderators can consider it to be taken up as a separate project. Just a thought. Namaste, The following sites have good glossaries; if anyone finds additional words not available there, we can add a supplement. http://www.katha.org/Academics/GLOSSARY%20A-H.html {ADVAITA VEDANTA http://www.angelfire.com/co/advaitavedanta/Glossary1.html } D Krishna Ayyar http://www.advaita.org.uk/sanskrit_intro_eot.htm Regards, Sunder p.s.
