I can't claim to be authoritative. But a few readers of Chapters

3,4,5 of my book on 'Live Happily the Gita Way' have told me that

the process of meditation described here has been useful to them.

Would you like to refer to these chapters? They are available in

http://www.geocities.com/profvk/livehappily_3.html

and the subsequent two web pages.

PraNAms to all advaitins.

Eknath Easwaran has written some great books, and all of them discuss

meditation. He recommends silent repetition of a mantra. He also

recommends memorizing passages from any of the world's great mystical

scriptures and then going over them silently in one's head. I've

followed his advice and memorized the last section of chapter two of

the Bhagavad Gita (in Easwaran's English translation). It's quite

wonderful to have this passage available at all times without having

to carry a book around. His theory, which he sees in the Upanishads,

is that what you desire most deeply, you eventually become. So

meditate on the mantra and mystical scriptures in order to become a

mystic.

I would be receptive to any reaction about this from the list members.

I have been compiling some useful meditation links in the past year

or so for my own reading and also as a resource for others in our

local Satsang who often asks these questions.

I will be posting a series of articles on Meditation as a 'topic of

the month' sometime later this year.

Meanwhile here are some useful links where you will get practical

tips and a broader understanding of meditation.

The links below broadly cover traditional (vedantic/upasana),

Buddhist and some western authors.

It is very important to get a strong intellectual conviction about

the need for meditation and the benefits/importance thereof before

even commencing any meditation practice.

Mindfulness in Plain English

The complete text of this popular book is online here. Some people

say it's the best book ever written for beginning meditators. Using

down-to-earth, nuts-and-bolts language, it explains how to practice

the Buddhist Vipassana meditation (also called insight meditation).

The result is increased mindfulness (also called bare attention or

witness consciousness).

Beginning meditators may find it useful to divide meditation

methods into two categories, those that stress concentration

(holding onto a single thought) and those that stress mindfulness

(remaining aware of what the mind is perceiving without getting lost

in thought). A list of books , online papers and links.

Guided meditation tapes (with follow-along manasika puja) by Swami

Paramarthananda are also a great way to start.

Namaste Jayaram,

once i learned the kriya-yoga-meditation technique...

it's a technique which need some concentration on the chakras...and

also the breath related to this energy points....

when there is inner love for ...the Self...God....it make the

practice more efficient....

i think one can enter in meditation when there is some deep inner

love.....and calmness.....

many techniques exist for meditation....

some techniques need an explanation of an experienced teacher...and

can't be found in a book...

there are maybe some information about the kriya-yoga technique i

mentionned on:

www.kriya.org

best wishes and Regards

love and peace
