Guest guest
List Moderator's Note: Welcome to the list, thanks for the introduction, and we look forward to your active participation with thoughtful and insightful questions and comments. Greetings to All, My welcome letter asked that I say a few things about my joining here. I found your group today and joined after reading a few of your messages. I was looking for a group where I could learn more about Oneness. I realized on my own recently that there can only be one reality and one being, and then set out to find out who or what that is. I understand this pretty well, but how to realize and experience it on the highest level is something I'm dealing with right now. One of the posts I just read was the one about Reincarnation questions. I, too, know this is real, but it's only real on a dream-like basis, yet real because I have the imprints and memories that prove it; I have the consequences and sufferings that prove it, plus the blessings and good things that prove it. But how to return to Oneness with Infinite Consciousness is what I don't understand. To know is one thing, to be there is another. To let things fall away by knowing and experiencing and just being, is why I'm here. It seems there are stages or levels to go through; just knowing "I am" or "I am that" is great but not altogether there, so I'm here to help it sink in and resonate with me, as if there's a me for it to resonate with. One thing I would like to ask is if someone could point me to a translation of the words used from Sanskrit, such as vasana, samskara, jnani, etc, .etc., -- and also, why are some of the letters in the middle of these words capitalized, and not at the beginning of the word? I'm familiar with "seeing" these words a lot, but new to forming an understanind of them in English. Thank you all, Dorie
Guest guest
Dorie Welcome to the list. In the archives of this advaitin list, there is a glossary of Sanskrit words with English meanings that Dennis and Sunder have compiled. You can download the list for your use. About the capitalization, we are following ITRNS scheme for transliteration of Sanskrit that uses capital letters instead of accent signs on the characters. Most of the terms you are looking for are well-defined technical words with precise meaning. Unfortunately, there are no equivalent English words that give the same precise meaning. Vasana-s can be translated as inclinations, tendencies, or personal traits but it is more than that. It is fragrance or impression left behind in the subtlest of the mind-intellect complex by a will-full action or thought. Tendencies are developed when these are reinforced by repeated actions or thoughts. They essentially form grooves or thought channels where the mind is conditioned. To get out of those conditionings one has to reprogram the mind and that is the essence of saadhanaa or spiritual practice. These grooves are also called samskaara-s. samskaara is also used for purification process (reconditioning) of the mind by saadhanaa. Hari OM! Welcome to the group, Dorie Swanrose. I see that you are already on the high road to a Spiritual Quest. "How to return to Oneness with Infinite Consciousness" is your fundamental question. Very legitimate question! It is necessary to appreciate your wording of the question. It is well-worded! "How to return to ..." are the key words. The word "return" suggests that your original position is that Oneness with Consciousness. That is the key! Now that you know and are convinced that your normal state is that "One-ness with Consciousness" that is the beginning. And the end too! Keep close to that thought. Do not allow that thought of oneness to slip away from you. Then, the scriptures say with one voice, you are on the right road. Yes, there are "stages and levels to go through". But don't worry about those stages or levels. They will evolve themselves for you, suiting your own evolution and preparedness. Your first thought that you want to "return" to that Oneness with Consciousness is the crucial mantra. You have already found the mantra. Analyse every one of your thoughts and actions yourself. If that thought or action is not tuning well with your fundamental thought of "returning to oneness with Consciousness" then that thought or action has to be discouraged. This is the strategy for action in daily life. God Bless you! PraNAms to all advaitins. profvk
