Quest for happiness

CHENNAI: : The majority of people, including the spiritually-

inclined, propagate peace as the ultimate in life. But, if one pauses

to consider, it will become clear that one needs peace of mind to

engage even in mundane activities. So, peace is not the end to be

achieved but a fundamental requirement of life. It is then essential

to understand what peace is. Like the human emotions of agony,

ecstasy and anger, peace is also a certain kind of chemistry. What

then is the end that human beings strive for?

In his discourse, Sri Jaggi Vasudev said much of the activities on

this planet were in search of happiness. Irrespective of whether it

is God, wealth or power that a person seeks, it is happiness that he

finally wants from his pursuit. Quest for happiness has resulted in

tremendous achievements in the last century; much more than what

mankind had achieved in 10,000 years. Material progress has made ours

the most comfortable generation of all that had lived on this Earth;

yet, we are no more joyful or peaceful than the others in the past.

Why is it so?

The modern man has done much about fixing the world outside to

command his creature comforts but he is not happy within. This has

resulted in downscaling by bandying peace as the desirable end

because we have resigned ourselves to the idea that bliss is not

within our reach.

Socially, every person has a distinct identity and position but

existentially a human being is life energy. A person is ecstatic,

tranquil, sorrowful or angry according to the external situation. If

an individual's life energy can happen by choice, he will definitely

choose to be ecstatic always. Man is unhappy because his life energy

is not happening by choice.

The life energy of man longs to be joyful. What is preventing him

from being joyful? The reason for this is that the body, mind and

emotions are functioning on their own without taking instructions

from the life energy within. Supposing a person's car does not

function according to what he wants it to do, will he not immediately

bring it to a halt? So also, should it be in the case of man. We are

so preoccupied with the life outside that not much attention has been

paid to our interiority. One must first understand that the happiness

one is trying to find through the various worldly pursuits must be

sought within.
