Guest guest
praNAm all, (To the list moderators: I have read this chain in its entirety and although there was a stop suggested to beating the dead horse, I hope its okay to bring out a small point. Thanks in advance) Sanjay-ji said: ....The very structure of ashramas ensures that sannyAsa comes after gruhastha. praveen: (Although I'm on the same side of the fence that you're on about the subject line) is it not true that vanaprastha aashram comes after grihasta, not necessarily sannyaasa? I recall that Sw. Chandrasekharendra Saraswati states in Hindu Dharma that sannyaasa can be taken from any of the four aashrams. Of course, that doesn't change the core of what you meant above. jai bajrangabali, --praveeN
Guest guest
I had some further discussions on this topic (outside this list) with Sri Ram Chandran. I found his views quite useful esp. about dual roles of Shankara as: (i) a teacher of advaita and; (ii) as an upholder of Hindu dharma, which placed great emphasis on varna-ashrama system. Most of the times, both the roles overlapped but sometimes there was divergence in the two roles. I would request Sri Ram Chandran or ProfVK or some other knowledgeable person to elaborate on this thought sometime. praNAm
