Kanakadhara' Yagna at Kalady

KOCHI: Kalady, the birthplace of philosopher saint Adi Sankara, is

getting ready to host a two-month-long `Kanakadhara Yagna,' to be

held for the first time in Kerala, from August 17 to October 12.

Thirty-two selected Vedic priests from the State will chant, non-

stop, `Kanakadhara Sthotram,' 19 slokas, composed by Adi Sankara.

According to a legend, Adi Sankara recited the slokas addressing

Goddess Lakshmi when he visited a house, the inmates of which were

very poor. They only had gooseberries to offer him. As he completed

the slokas, there was a rain of golden gooseberries.

The priests would recite the slokas 1,05,600 times in front of the

Sri Krishna Temple here, the managing trustee of the 1,200-year old

Kalady Devaswom Sreevalsan Namboodiri said. - PTI
